I think I have it fixed.
Took a 60 grit flap wheel to the gimbal ring and case. Sanded down to remove most/all of the remaining galling, then sanded on the ring until I had about a business card's worth of gap (no more rubbing):
I couldn't feel any play in the trim pivots. And since I was...
Can't say I can top any of these.... but here's the worst things I've had in my 2.5 years of boating:
-Hit the Ohio River with my wife, my best friend, and his buddy (Duffy's Landing, Indiana). Water is way rougher than expected and any time we go above idle it doesn't go well. Finally find...
Did some work on it after work today (at least until the heat got to me :( )
First, the ground clamp damage is on the other side which doesn't rub and has about a 1/8" clearance to the gearcase. Speaking of clerances, that side is flush at the tilt pin joint, while the side rubbing has a small...
I just remembered another thing... One of the two gearcase ears had arc pitting from a ground clamp when a tool shop and I had tried and failed to weld nuts on broken bolts seized in the case (in both cases we had to drill and helicoil). I thought I filed that smooth but it's possible in the...
I'll have to measure and inspect closer. If the one shoe is slightly off, am I good to sand the surfaces to adequate clearance? Getting some serious sticker shock looking at replacement rings... Would be the most expensive repair to date.
Pulled the rams off. Was tight and dry... A couple of year ago I used silicone paste but apparently when I had the drive off last I didn't reapply anything. What's the suggested lube?
As for the noise. I think I found it. The upper case is grinding on the gimbal ring:
I should have...
I see. I bottomed out the nuts when I re-installed my outdrive after the last offseason's repairs as I always have. Is that incorrect? The bushings were replaced a few years ago.
But more importantly, how serious of an issue is it?
Noticed a weird popping noise when lowering my outdrive (MC-1 888) after I got home from an outing today. See video.
Is this normal? If not, what would cause it? I did hit a bit of wood today, once hard enough I thought I nailed the prop (but the prop, despite being plastic, only had...
I had always been under the impressing that there was more to it than just a shop press, as ubiquitous as such presses are. Or is that a "if you had to ask, you're not supposed to know" smoke and mirrors show? Perhaps, a "you can but you'll ruin it" situation, which would put me in luck if all I...
Here's an atypical prop question: I have four aluminum props sitting around with rubber hubs. One has a spun hub (pressed Mercruiser), one has hub starting to dry rot (Michigan Wheel that appears to be pressed), and two have substantial damage (both are pressed Mercruisers, one has a rotted hub...
I have. I have an 18 pitch 4 bladed prop that hits middle of WOT range under load, while I have a 19 pitch 3 bladed prop that hits top of WOT range under load. The 19 runs a bit faster. But the 4 blade has more lift and doesn't respond to trimming... and also has a buttload of rake to the point...
Technically, it can be if comparing props of different types (material, blade count, rake, diameter, etc.), although the "is is a correct prop" determination is a factor of WOT RPM and what the engine's spec calls for.
