    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

To close this thread out in case anyone else runs through this same rabbit hole that I did, I decided to abandon this project. After doing some more research on Mercocil power heads, I learned that this is a constant problem with them. The cylinders are easily scored for multiple reasons. Rather...

Jay's Block Shop will do it for $75 a cylinder. I think I'll be going that route. Now I need to figure out which pistons I want to stick back in it.

Yeah, after doing some more reading on forums, it sounds like the sleeve replacement is a solution for lack of proper equipment. I found US Chrome https://www.usnicom.com/plating/pricing out of Wisconsin but they have so many options and were not very helpful when I called for a quote. I'll try...

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

I talked to a guy in FL who says you can bore these motors but you cannot hone them, so he re-sleeves them. Does this sound right? He wants $600.

Really, new rods and reeds as well? No one local does boring. Any boring shops nationwide you'd recommend?

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

That was my plan at this point. All I need is a decent cylinder half of the block, new pistons and rings. New piston and ring's will run $300 and I can't decide if It's better to buy a used block like this one...

Thanks, Faztbullet. That would have been a pretty good find for a boat and motor. Unfortunately, when I went to check it out, the motor only had 80 PSI in both cylinders. Oh well, I'm in no hurry. Don't need a running motor until June.

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

So upon further inspection, it looks like the previous owner ran this motor with a disintegrated impeller. This caused a catastrophic overheating that must have caused the pistons to expand to the point where they scored the cylinders. Almost anything made of plastic or rubber connected to this...

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

It's north of Toronto by three hours, on the French River. We have a couple of V-hulls we flip over when we're not there. Of coarse we didn't get to come up this year. MOD EDIT

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

I live in Nashville TN. Deals on outboards are not too common around here lately and I'm NOT looking for something so old that they don't sell parts for it anymore. I already had to scavenge to find parts for the 83 mariner 25 to get it running again. I picked up a 96 Johnson 25 that I had to...

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

Maybe this is a better question. If I were to spend the $1700 or so to install a new power head, new water pump and replace the various other melted or broken electrical parts, what else should I be looking out for on a motor that has suffered light scoring in both cylinders and given the melted...

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

Lack of maintenance can apply to any outboard model but I still see plenty of older Johnson’s on the market. I found 1 used 25hp late 90’s Mercury and lots of power heads with scored cylinders.

    Reliability of 1998 25hp EH

I picked up a 25HP that looks to have overheated badly. From my calculations, it would cost around $1600 to get it running again. I've noticed that there don't seem to be too many of these motors on the used market but there seems to be quite a lot of ruined power heads. Are these just bad...

    Overheating?

Hi, I have a early 80’s Mariner(rebranded Yamaha) 25C 695 that I rebuilt. Motor runs fine now but I have only run it in a 50 Gal drum, my boat is in another location. The issue I’m having which may not even be an issue, is that the power head seemed really hot, way too hot to touch, after...

How bad is my ignition coil?

According to the service manual for my mariner 25C 695, the primary ignition coil should measure 1.6-1.3 ohms. I measured 2 ohms. Is this a big deal? Should I replace it?
