What year did OMC begin rating horsepower at the prop rather than at the crankshaft? How much power is absorbed by the driveline? 3%, 5%? . So, for example a FD series 18 hp Johnson would be rated today as 17, 17.5 hp?
I like the whole concept behind the J&E 9.5 motors. Low profile and unique in appearance.
But I've been waved off by many who say they're troublesome, and hard to work on.
Plus several people have said they were down on power - more like a good 7 1/2 than a 10.
Were they, are they really...
Apparently there were 1956 Johnson 7 1/2hp models AD-10 and AD-10 M.
According to the OMC parts book, there were different numbers for the gearcase and gearcase bearings, propellers and the tiller arm throttle rods. What was the functional difference between the two motors?
All you guys who are getting ready to tackle that old '50's - 60's Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, etc that you picked up at a yard sale this summer for a winter project:
Do nothing until you read Max Wawrzyniak's fantastic columns at:

If this has already been posted, my apologies, but I can't find it.
I need the cylinder head bolt torque specs for my 1956 Johnson 7.5 hp motor.
Many thanks,
