Swapping power head units or midsection lower units or swivel transom mounts between Mercury 83 50 HP 4 cylinder and 93 40 HP

I would do either cowling-- whatever is easier or better. The only thing I really care about is the BIA mounting and the power tilt and trim that goes with it. And an engine with good compression in all four cylinders. Although maybe I should research this--- I don't know if there are...

Swapping power head units or midsection lower units or swivel transom mounts between Mercury 83 50 HP 4 cylinder and 93 40 HP

I think you are possibly right about 5 and 9. I didn't think of that. I am not sure what you are referring to as "upper motor mounts". Where are those?

Swapping power head units or midsection lower units or swivel transom mounts between Mercury 83 50 HP 4 cylinder and 93 40 HP

And looking at the problem from the other direction-- The bumper plates (6 and 10) and the bolts (7 and 19) that attach the top of the swivel bracket are the same. And the yoke ( 13 and 7) that attach the bottom of the swivel bracket are the same It really seems like just swapping the swivel...

Swapping power head units or midsection lower units or swivel transom mounts between Mercury 83 50 HP 4 cylinder and 93 40 HP

That is a good question. I took a look at some of those part diagrams, and I did figure out that the power head gaskets (8 and 9 in these two diagrams) are the same, and the exhaust gaskets (26 and 10) are the same, but the actual adapter plates (number 1 in both) are different. That is as...

Swapping power head units or midsection lower units or swivel transom mounts between Mercury 83 50 HP 4 cylinder and 93 40 HP

So I have a 1983 Mercury 50 HP 4 cylinder outboard, but I have just about decided that I really want an outboard with BIA transom bolt pattern and power tilt and trim that mounts between the BIA transom mounts to be fully compatible with a hydraulic jack plate I have. Next I found a guy with a...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

And one more thing I did not realize. After doing more research---my understanding is that these early 80's 4 cylinder 50hp 2 stroke mercs are often called "classic 50s". And while the 50HP version ended some time in the mid 80's (1986?) that, similar 4 cylinder outboards continued to sold as...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

I think both those ideas might be easier to do than I thought. I am going to look into it some more

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

This is the picture of the back of my jackplate-- where the motor mounts. You can see the BIA pattern holes drilled into the back plate. The problem I am going to have is that the jack plate cylinders are about 16 inches apart-- meaning that they are going to interfere with the mounting of the...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

So to start at the beginning, I have been wanting to go fishing at a place called Lee's Ferry in northern Arizona since I hiked in that area as a boy scout. It is the stretch of the Colorado River right below lake powell. You can put at Lee's Ferry and you can go up about 13 miles to the dam...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

Thank you for your efforts in the cold. The more I look into this the more I think I am going to have either not use the jack plate I have or not use the power tilt and trim. Unless I were to not use either of these motors and instead find a newer one with a BIA pattern and the power...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

None of those pictures are actually my motors. I have two 50hp in my possession. One is still laying in the back of the SUV covered in grime and the other one is in pieces in the garage. When I get them out and cleaned up I will take some pictures. I am hoping to get one functioning motor...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

I guess this distance between the hole on the trim unit bracket and the hole on the mount. But I am not really sure how it mounts. Do you have two holes in your transom for each tilt bracket? One in the whole I highlighted and one in the slot below it? To be honest, I am not even sure how...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

I know the newer Mercury outboards use the standard BIA pattern, but I am not sure what the older pattern is-- and in particular the pattern needed for the separate power tilt and trim. The older mount has four mounting holes in a line that look to be narrower than the standard BIA pattern. I...
