Been squirting oil into everything I can around the engine. Found one engine zerk and gave it 20 squirts of marine grease. The engine will not budge a tiny bit.
The boat sat for at least four years I think. 650 starts good and seems fine shifting gears. Steering cables seem stout and fine...
The trailer tires do not look good and I am about to make a 2600 mile trip. The tires show cracks around the wheel, possibly just cosmetic but it looks bad.
I have some good looking trailer tires that would fit. They are rated at 1045/lbs tire at 80 psi. Suspect they will work but really unsure...
Seems like I have seen this before. Thinking it may be very common. I tossed it in a fire half expecting it to help douse the flame. No....the fire loved it. Great....much more oil than water. at least.
Now where does a Merc 650 pee? You know what I mean. Had the bottom in a deformed oil...
Some of them have a sign that indicates which side is OK with being placed on its side. Some....do not.
What happens if we take our chances? Then wind up placing it on the wrong side? Because the original owner removed the sticker......
This 4hp came with a boat that also has a 65hp. It didn't want to start with the 2 cycle mix. Has been a long time since it last really ran.
I would go outside and play with it. Feeling quite sick today.
No idea what to expect. The last owner was an older railroad mechanic who "had no idea if it will start or not." He wanted the yard room back apparently and had not used the boat in "4-5 years."
The boat hull looks very good and is pretty heavy. Truck gas mileage took a pretty significant hit...
Believe it or not, I spent 15 minutes searching around and am not sure. The seller has no image and states that it worked well until "the lower unit cracked due to improper winterization." Lots of water in the unit?
Have taken a liking to old Merc's. Now I have a service manual....with no...
Still have the top knobs. Misplaced the valve section that keeps air from rushing out after airing up. Seems that sellers want to sell the whole thing for about $24/valve with the cap. I still have all the caps.
I may find the valves someday. Not wishing to spend $100 if I can avoid it. There...
Been told the only difference is the sacrificial anodes on the saltwater outboards?
I have some old outboards dating back top the 50's. Things could have been different then?
What happens when a freshwater outboard is used in saltwater for extended periods? Assuming that sacrificial anodes are...
Mercury Mark IV Thunderbolt 40hp.....1957. My shop manual is 13 miles away at a closed post office.
Motor last started 8 years ago. Showed a glimmer of interest in catching three times. Only has 20% of full range in throttle cable. Choke closes about 50%.
Mission Impossible?
What looked easy has become mission impossible. I bought a donated 1978 S2 on Ebay. The ad stated that the "adjustable trailer needed adjusting." Easy enough...right? The 13hp Yanmar had been removed due to overheating when last used. That was eight years ago.
The S2 has a 4' draft. The...
This is an 80's vintage EZ-Loader dual axle trailer. It seems like all similar EZ-Loader trailers are equipped with single axle surge brakes. Titan Model 10 Surge-A-Matic surge brake system.
Hauling it home from California, a steel brake line snapped next to the junction tee that feeds the...
Other than a bad thermostat?
The previous owner of my S2 quit sailing when the Yanmar 10hp started running hot. Hyacinth are a huge problem in the area. I suspect that plant material got pulled in and clogged stuff up. Is that likely?
May be the heat exchanger? How tough and expensive might...
