Iv seen a few other manuals that go from 1970-1990. Found one thats for a 1990 40-55hp. Would it do me any good on my motor?Its a Johnson manual not an aftermarket

Started my boat Sun morning at my house and it started right up.Took it to the lake and nothing.Smelled like it was flooded. Took it home and took out the plugs and spun it to dry out the motor. Got it running and then took it to the lake and it ran just fine. Stoped/started...
Iv taken off 6 bolts from the bottom. And taken the shift rod lever loose.Pulled the shift rod out toward the case(oppostie of fuel supply side). The lower unit drops down about 2-3 inches and then wont come down any farther. Is there something Im missing?
