Is an L-drive an outboard with a separate drive attached to it somehow, or what? How do they compare to other engines as far as how easy they are to work on?

I have a '68 85hp Evinrude that needs a water pump replaced. I took the lower set of bolts off and the lower unit comes down about 1 inch then stops. Is there something up toward the top of the driveshaft that would cause it to hang? It sounds like something hits something when it stops coming...

I am trying to reinstall the outdrive on a 1983 140hp after a bellows and gimble bearing replacement. It is an alpha 1 outdrive that goes on so far and then stops. It looks like the u-joints are hitting the housing. Any tricks to getting it back on?
If I unhook the wires to the ignition switch and use a jumper to crank my 68 85hp evinrude, will it spark if the ignition switch was keeping it from sparking. Is this a good way to test if the ignition switch is bad?

If the plug is left in a boat and it gets quite a bit of water in it, (nearly up to the top of the oil filter) will the water get into the bellows etc. and do damage to the drive?

I was wondering if it is worth the trouble to get a motor (75hp johnson) that was run without oil and locked up and possibly rebuild it. What damage is possible to motor in this siutation and what would probably have to be done if worth fixing.
