Trying to reinstall lower unit on my 6 HP merc, 1964 outboard after replacing the water pump impeler. Any secrets to lining up the drive shaft and shift rod?

I've got my 1964 6HP merc lower unit removed, cleaned up, new parts ready to go back in. Now the fun part. On the main drive shaft there is a small ball that is inserted in the shaft to drive the impeler in the water pump. this is now missing. any ideas?
Second question is what is the trick...
I'm attempting to fix some leaks in the lower unit of my 1964 merc 6HP. Pulled the lower unit and the prop. How do I get into the inner workings? or do I need to? The leak appears to be there. Large notched ring with an on/off arrow makes me think with the correct tool, I can remove this...
