I replaced my 1989 40 HP with a 2007 50 HP 2 stroke. Kept my controls but the throttle cable end seems too long. Did Yamaha reverse the push/pull direction between those years?
I have a 1989 40 HP 2 stroke 3 Cyl Yamaha. Slipping out of gear, plus it's got low compression. A dealer in town had a 2007 50 HP 2 stroke 3 Cyl that I bought.
Would you keep the 40 around for potential parts on the 2007? I know they are 18 years apart, but they look identical.

2 Stroke
3 cylinder
3 carburetors

This post doesn't really have a goal. Just wanted to start a discussion on diagnosing a piston slap noise in the crankcase. I found a few old posts, but not a ton of info out there on this. If...
You know the story, went from short shaft to long. Anyways, this is what I came up with.
I don't weld and the aluminum was from a shelving unit behind my work. Only thing I bought were the bolts and the composite decking. Might add some bracing, but it feels pretty stout. Hope it works out...
Symptom: Engine would start and run cold, but once I ran it a while.........it would not start back up. Engine has strong compression and is getting plenty of fuel. Seemed like an ignition issue, so I started by replacing the ignition coil packs. Yes, I probably should have learned how to...
Thanks in advance for any helpful information.
I need help troubleshooting my issue. I'm looking for advice on where to start, or ways I can narrow down the problem.
Here is my outboard:
1984 35 HP Evinrude

Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
Well my Pinion and forward gears are shot.
I guess i need to decide weather to look for a new set of gears, or a used complete lower unit. Probably set me back...
Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
yes I agree
I used a nice dewalt plug in drill, so no weak battery drill
Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
Okay here is my update
I removed the impeller housing spacer and ran the engine on the boat ramp. The clanking noise still happened, so it is not the spacer. I also...

Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound, only in gear
Short shaft I believe.
Not really sure how important this spacer peice really is. I guess it prevents water from spraying up through the shaft splines. I would...

Re: 1984 Evinrude 35hp knocking or clicking sound
Okay I'm back at it again with an update. I guess I am stumped as far as what to check for now.
I removed my lower unit from the midsection and gave her the old drill test. I lifted the shift...
first of all god bless you folks for the free suggestions and advice.
I have a knocking sound when throttle is applied. the engine is running fine and I know it only happens when in gear and the drive shaft is spinning. i revved it up with the choke lever on the controls and the noise did not...
I have a 1980 25HP Evinrude rope start tiller.
I am having a problem getting it started after it has warmed up.
When I first put the boat in the water it fires right up, even with no choke. After I run it for 15 minutes or so, the engine is almost impossible to start back up. I have tried...
Alright I just bought my first boat
1968 Shell Lake 15' fiberglass tri-hull. The interior is gutted minus two casting
decks on the front and back. This boat is used for fishing. The boat seems
pretty light made of thin fiberglass. I can lift it of the hitch without too much
problem...
