    Pinion nut removal, Motorguide FW-FB 54 trolling motor

    Anyone have any ideas on how to get this pinion nut off in order to replace the bearing? I've already tried channel lock, vise grip and hammering a pin at an angle where the set screw goes (getting desperate). I'm hesitant to use any heat with all the plastic nearby.

    I sealed the transom board with 3 coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane. Are you referring to the area where the corner caps were removed?

    Good idea. I used plugs cut out from some same thickness aluminum sheet and covered inside and out with a thin coat of J-B Weld SteelStik.

    Thank you for your thoughts. I've done a lot of searching and haven't found anyone with this type of transom brace (or console). I do suspect that the boat from the factory had a clamp on motor, then someone repowered it and installed it the best they could. I ran the boat on the water a couple...

    To begin with, this is my first boat so cut me some slack. This boat came with a 1991 40hp Johnson which is operational. I decided that the first thing I should do is replace the transom board and plate. I've removed the motor and boards and now I'm trying to decide how to rebuild the transom...
