Recently did a Link & Sync, and I am having a few problems with the throttle control. I will say that the throttle control was never good even before the Link & Sync. I did try to follow the Top Secret post as well as the Factory Service manual. Here are the problems:
1. Once in forward gear...
After taking the boat out with my buddy to do the timing at 5000 RPM in the open ocean, I realized it was way too fast & choppy, not to mention all the salt spray. So I looked at the Top Secret File for the Reeves Timing Method, and had some questions for my '89 Johnson 70 after doing a full...
I am replacing all the smaller carb fuel lines at the "T"s for the carbs and primer solenoid. Photo attached.
After unsuccessfully trying 3/16" fuel line from the local auto parts store where all the connections leaked fuel when priming (I know, I am dumb), I realized it had to be a smaller...
Need some Sync and Lync Handholding for an '89 70HP
I have been avoiding this procedure, mainly because it calls for some things that I don't have or are hard to get, and looked pretty complicated.
Reason is that I am having some rough idle/starting issues, and figured since I don't know how...
Rebuilt the carbs on my '89 Johnson 70, and replaced all 5 gaskets. 3 between carb and block, 1 between carb and silencer, and 1 between silencer and cover.
I ran the boat a few hours after the rebuild, and inspected the inside bottom cover for fuel leakage, and it was spotless. We trailered...
First, I don't know if the two problems of hard starting and rough idle are related. And sorry for the long post, just wanted to make sure I provide as much info as possible.
When first starting with muffs or just at the dock, the engine usually starts fairly easily, after now understanding...
Recently installed a Sierra/Teleflex Temp Gauge and Sender Unit (68402P), which just has the gauge for COLD-HOT. I have an '89 Johnson 70.
I wanted a gauge with actual degree numbers, so the local shop sold me a 68401 gauge which goes from 120-240F. Turns out this is really meant for an...
I am completing the replacement of my thermostat today, as well as inspecting and cleaning out the carbs.
I have all 3 new gaskets, and wondered if gasket sealant is needed for any of these?
1. Thermostat
2. Air filter box
3. Carb cover? Not sure what this is called.
This is an '89 Johnson...
I went to replace the thermostat, along with the rubber cup and brass valve seat. The brass seat valve (part # 0320880) is frozen in place.
I know I should have just left the original in there, but I have already gotten myself in pretty deep, so that is no longer an option. See Photo...
I have attached a rewire diagram for my 1980 Chrysler Striper with 1989 Johnson 70, after reading this article:
http://newboatbuilders.com/pages/electricity13.html
Some of the work I have already done out of necessity, but several items are still not done, and I am not opposed to redoing...
I will be doing the full tell tale mod at a later date based on this:
http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engin...ng-a-tell-tale
But for now, I just want to reroute mine, and will need to buy new hose (I think mine is currently 5/16" inside diameter, though it looks like 3/16" or 5/16" might work)...
EDIT: Changed Temp Sensor to Thermostat.
I have a 1989 Johnson 70, and it has a very specific overheating issue at certain RPM ranges. I don't have a very good understanding of how outboards work, so forgive me if I am missing something obvious. I am really looking to see if what I am observing...
I just want to make sure I plugged the correct lines and disconnected the right sensor wires. And of course I will now premise at 50:1.
Also wondering if my new routing of the fuel lines might cause any problems. The previous owner used zip ties on the fuel and oil lines, and so I took the time...
1989 Johnson 70 Warning Horn Seems Faulty - Do I need it under my Circumstances?
I have a 1989 Johnson 70, which fails any warning horn tests of grounding the 3 tan wires with ignition on (VRO, oil tank, engine temp sensor tan wires). This leads me to believe the buzzer itself is faulty.
I...
I have a 1989 Johnson 70, and the charging voltage at the cranking battery is about 16.5 volts at idle with just the flushing ears hooked up.
1. I want to connect my cranking battery and my house battery together with a battery switch, and want them both to be able to charge when the engine is...
