A little back ground is, this is the motor that powered the boat for my mom and dads first date. He bought it new with the skeeter in '78. After giving it to...
On my '78 90hp. I changed the water pump. Water started coming out the 2 square holes in the back...It's peeing good but there is pretty good bit coming out the square. I hope it's something I did, but I know I lined up the tube, that's the only thing I know it could be. Can anyone give me some...
I put back together my '78 90hp Merc. While I was trying to start it I noticed the wires were smoking from the wiring harness inside the motor. It seems the ground that goes to the cowl is getting the hottest. I checked the polarity on the battery and it was right. I had taken the harness out...

Re: What timing light?
Ok that helps thanks! I do have a tach, however it's 30years old like the motor. It was working the last time the motor was running but I don't know how accurate it is.
One more question. While searching on ebay to look at different types I found some self powered timing...
My 1978 90hp is drying from a new paint job right now. Hopefully Saturday I will put it back together.
I know I need a timing light, so I went to the local auto part store. There was a digital and inductive....Which one should I get? What is the difference, besides about $60 in price.
Re: What the heck are these pieces??????
Gomer I think you are close..But that's about the only thing I didn't take off. Could it go under that arm. Which would put it between the arm from the motor and the arm from the shift cable?
This is the state of my motor right now..LOL
While washing and degreasing 33 years from the motor and bottom cowl. I found these little pieces and this little bushing thing.

I have a 1978 90hp merc. Is there anyway I can add a temp gauge?
I noticed on the 115 of the same year, there is threads going into the block by the #1 spark plug. I was thinking that is what they were for.
Re: Mercury paint
Here are a few pictures. I will wait for Saturday til I try and touch it and see if I'm still having the same problems. It came out way better than I expected! There was only two spots that no one but me will notice and one was me trying to pull some fuzz off before it dried...
I bought some Mercury Quicksilver Phantom Black to repaint my outboard. I did a test on a extra cowl support bracket. After letting it sit for about 24hours when I touched it, I left a white film..I have the Quicksilver clear coat on the way, but I couldn't wait so I just gave it a try. My...

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new here and some of this is kind of new to me.
These are my '78 90 and 115 towers. I plan on taking the distibutor off the 115 and putting it on the 90. One of my questions is, why would the distributor go out on the 90 in the first place. My dad took the cap off and the...
I'm new here and would like to start off by saying hello and thanks for the help in advance!
I have two 1977 mercurys, one is a 90hp and one is a 115hp. Everything that I have read and heard is that the distributors (and some other things) are interchangeable. My goal is to take the distributor...
