    4s full of oil

OK answered my own question, the springs should return the choke to open once the electrotherm device releases but they are not. Seems the springs on the choke shaft levers aren't getting it done unless the choke solenoid core is in an exact position perpendicular to the swing. Appears the...

    4s full of oil

I did make a part for the choke unloader, it's not pretty but seems to be working and was able to make all the preliminary mechanical adjustments. Once the JB weld is cured I'll get the carbs mounted and we'll see where it's at. I haven't seen to many newer motors so the choke circuit on this...

    4s full of oil

Update. Got it firing on all four but still problems so went ahead and cleaned the carbs. Got it re-assembled doing some of the preliminary adjustments for the carb linkage and discovered that the choke unloader adjustment screw and mounting tab had been broken off. Looks like it was made of...

    4s full of oil

Just a follow up. I did pump the oil out as suggested and didn't stop until the oil mist did. To my surprise it popped right off, smoked a bit, but wasn't running very good after the smoke stopped. Found one of the spark plug caps had an open 5k resistor. Waiting for parts now but...

    4s full of oil

OK Guys thx, that's what I'll do. I agree about laying it down, I had it the right way but I don't know how the owner had it stored off the boat. Looks like I have a leak in the hydraulics to fix as well but I'll let you know how it works out. Thx

    4s full of oil

No idea how to deal with this, do you? I picked up a 2000 Merc 50 4stroke and loaded in my pickup head down prop up. After a 6 hour drive the truck bed was full of oil. It did sit another day or so before I could get it up and out. I found the o ring in the oil fill plug was flattened and...

    1965 3.9hp plug fouls

My apologizes for not following up sooner, kinda forgot. Here’s where it ended up. During the original maintenance before attempting to start it had a good spark by spinning the flywheel by hand so I did not look into the ignition. After everything we’ve been thro I felt the only thing creating...

    1965 3.9hp plug fouls

I agree, I expect to find some oil floating in there. The quantity is what is concerning me, especially after such short runs. Its not the first 2 cycle I've run in a barrel.

That ratio info is pretty interesting. I don't remember the brand of oil just that it's the correct spec, marine, and in a blue bottle. But I don't feel my Yamaha 40 smokes a lot nor all the other 2 cycles I use it in. But you know another thing that concerns me is all the oil in the test barrel.

    1965 3.9hp plug fouls

OK so going to run on the J8C for now. Still running way to rich it seems, lots of smoke and oil in the water. Waiting for a service manual now so I can check carb/ign sync and timing.

merc850 appreciate the info. For some reason I didn't see your post and got a J8c plug. That keeps it running now but there is still a carb issue I'll need to look into.
