Make sure motor is trimmed all the way down.
Pump up bulb tight, with key switched on push in key for 5 seconds , pump up bulb again choke for 5 seconds. Push in your throttle button and move it about 1" forward. Thier is a sweet spot on the throttle you will have to find .

You can get some fuel dye and uv light and glasses and run it on a smaller gas tank awhile and let it sit a few days then check it at night.
May have to leave it a week or more before you see something.

My 90 hp 2 stoke did do that .
Had a epa non pressure vented plastic gas tank. It would swell up in the sunlight looked like it was about to explode over pressuring the whole fuel system causing tiny leaks everywhere.
Went to an aluminum vented tank and it quit doing it.

On an older mercury mine creaking and popping was coming from the main cylinder pins , they go into fiber bushings . You may have a cover on each side with 2 bolts holding it on. You can try wd40 .
No grease fittings on mine.
Mine was only in fresh water.
And i did burn up the trim pump motor...

You really need to know the state of discharge on both of your batteries are at the end of the day.
Do you have a battery percentage meter you can put on both of the batteries one at a time?
They are pretty cheap to buy.

On the flywheel removal i think it is just a nut . It could be like these new automotive harmonic balancers wheres thier no key.
Checking with piston at tdc the line in the flywheel with the notch or dip in flywheel aligns with the trigger sensor , dont know why flywheel has marks on it after...

I did not do much voltage /amp measureing , my meters would not connect to my app so i did it the old fashion way i ran two wires from the battery i had selected batt voltage i did not charge it after last trip was 12.2 vdc cranked motor still 12.2 vdc , ran it up to 5,000 rpm still 12.2...

Did you find a manual for removing flywheel?
I always start both my motors at dock before i do anything to make sure they both crank, Guess what ?
My little hangkai 6 hp 2 stroke did not crank on the first pull or the 50th pull . It No cranky! I am cranky though.
