2005 F250 w/ ~2,000 hours. Unknown maintenance history.
Checked all valve clearances per the service manual. All intake valves are .178-.203 mm (within .17-.23 tolerance). All exhaust valves are .229-.279 mm (all tighter than .31-.37 mm tolerance).
Seems a bit unusual. I've pulled the shims...
I have read the manual..w/ lower unit in forward & bungee holding prop CCW, set adjustable stud to bottom of slot, set lower barrel to 6" then set upper barrel w/ light pressure on cable and back out 4 turns. Move adjustable stud if necessary to shift into reverse (holding prop CW).

This is a 1987 Mercruiser 260, 4bbl Quadrajet. Engine has 145-160psi compression all the way around.
The vacuum fluctuates from 9-13...
#1, #3: 85psi compression
All others: 140-160psi compression
Pressure test of coolant system showed leaks into #1 & #3
Head gasket shows a break between cylinder & water jacket on #1 & #3.
Any ideas what could cause this?

Had the engine apart to replace a head gasket. This is a 1987 Mercruiser (Chevy) 350 w/ Thunderbolt IV electronic ignition (yes it has electronic advance). Also replaced spark plugs with same plug number, but an updated (looked a bit different), AC Delco MR43T.
Put it back together as per SELOC...

Sometimes when I hit the key, the starter engages but won't crank (like the motor is locked up). Hit the key again and it will crank. (sometimes does, sometimes doesn't)
I don't think it's a bad battery...it's only a few months old and when it does turn over the battery is capable of turning...
After reading about the drive bellows and how quickly it can take out U-joints, gimbal bearing, etc. I'm going to make a point of checking the bellows and lower unit oil for water every couple of trips to the lake.
What's the easiest way? Drain a little and look for milky oil, take the top...
