Fuel/oil ratio for Mark 58ae? And how much SeaFoam?

What's the best fuel/oil ratio for my old 1959 Merc Mark 58ae? And how much SeaFoam should be mixed with the gas? Thanks!

Tach and temp gauge needed for 1959 Mark 58ae

Does anybody know of any aftermarket tachometers that will work on my Mark 58ae, and a temperature gauge that will hook up to this motor? The only gauge I have on my boat is an old Airguide speedometer, and I'd like to add a tach and a temp gauge. Thanks!

    Mark 58ae Saga Continues...

OK, we're almost there. The motor is cranking over. But I'm getting no spark. From what I've read on this board, an outboard motor must have three things in order to run: 1. Compression (this motor averages 120 lbs. per cylinder) 2. Fuel (no problem there: new kits are in the fuel pump...

Shorted SOMETHING out on Mark 58ae

I've been working on my motor for about two weeks on and off, and at this point I'm about an inch away from torching the &#^$ thing. I've kitted and refurbed just about everything on the old motor. Today I had it ready to start. I didn't have anybody helping me, and I wanted to use the choke...

Having trouble getting my lower unit back on

It's a Mercury Mark 58ae. Both the control lever and the gearbox are in neutral. Something's binding up or blocking my ability to get the lower unit all the way up, into place. There is a gap of about 1/2" to 3/4", keeping me from getting it up in there. The water pickup tube is right...

    What is 'Tip and Roll?'

What in the heck is 'tip and roll?' I read posts where somebody mentions that their home-applied tip and roll paint job came out smooth as silk, but I can't find an explanation of exactly what this method is. I understand that the use of a roller and a brush are involved, but how is this done...

Which direction to curve the impeller blades?

My new impeller for my 1958 Mark 58ae is waiting for me down at NAPA. I understand that the blades of the impeller curve to fit into its housing - and I don't remember which way they were going when I took out the old impeller (dumb, I know). Just for peace of mind; when viewing the impeller...

    When dropping lower unit

When dropping the lower unit in order to replace the water pump impeller on a 1958 Mark 58ae, which gear should I have it in? Or does it matter? Thanks!

Installed the new timing belt and the magneto...

1958 Mercury Mark 58ae 45HP Progress I installed the new timing belt (kinda tricky) and the magneto (points gapped at .008")with new plug wires, and installed the new spark plugs (gapped .025"). I'm STILL without a 5/8" Allen wrench to remove the lower unit so I can replace the impeller with...

    Mark 58AE Compression

I guess I should have asked this question before I tore into the motor, but.. The compression on my Merc Mark 58ae is as follows: #1 = 122 lbs. #2 = 119 lbs. #3 = 119 lbs. #4 = 120 lbs. This is OK, right?...I hope. What was the compression in these motors when they were brand-new?

When replacing the impeller in a Mark 58ae...

...do I need to replace the other parts of the water pump, or is it OK just to change the impeller? Also: do I need to order a lower unit gasket set, or are the old gaskets reuseable? I've never done a lower unit before.

    Working on a 48-year-old outboard

I worked on my 48-year-old Mercury Mark 58ae today. It hasn't been in running condition for many years, and I'm doing some of the standard things that need to be done to an old outboard to bring it back to life. Don't try this without first purchasing the dreaded $50 service manual, because...

    Tearing into the motor

I worked on my 48-year-old Mercury Mark 58ae today. It hasn't been in running condition for many years, and I'm doing some of the standard things that need to be done to an old outboard to bring it back to life. This motor is a 44-cubic inch 2-stroke that is rated at 45 horsepower. Don't try...

    Ugliest Boat Contest

Let's have some fun. Who has an ugly boat? Here's my personal entry, an old 16-ft. 1973 Chrysler bass boat with a 1972 Evinrude Starflite 85 HP. It's been sitting in the field for a couple of years, patiently waiting for me to install a new floor and transom and to scrub it down with...

Soon to be back on the water...finally

Hey there. I've been busy with life, so I haven't checked in here in, uh, about two years...man, where has the time gone? I spent last spring, summer, and fall managing a friend's campaign for district attorney, and didn't spend a single day at the lake or doing substantial work to my boat...
