    2000 Johnson 70 j70plsis

Thanks for the description. I picked up this entire outboard and controls for parts, so I'm not sure if I'll have the PH fixed, hold it, or sell it. Maybe I'll drop it off at a machine shop and have it assessed.

When Faztbullet posted the comment about pinning the cylinder, I searched and found that item. Looking again, that part is in the exhaust housing. Your assessment is what I was also thinking.

Where does the pin go? I found OMC part 350943 described as pin (sleeve). What do you think caused that groove?

    2000 Johnson 70 j70plsis

I just picked up a 2000 Johnson 70 hp outboard from Marketplace. The seller was very clear, it overheated and one cylinder sleeve has rotated out of position. That's OK, I bought a short block the day before and wanted this for parts anyway. So, I decided to take it apart and split the block to...

    Compression too high?

Syracuse NY ... also a very short boating season. I've pretty much decided on skipping this one .... but does anyone have a comment as to compression? How much is too much?

    Compression too high?

Sorry, my bad. '72 Rude on a '74 Starcraft Supersport 16'.

    Compression too high?

Yeah, missed a couple decent deals. Most J70 motors are around $2000 - $2500 in this generation. There's one or two guys locally that seem to buy up the decent used OBs to resell. I've seen some parts OBs for about $1200-$1800 but those are around 3-5 hours away. I'm not in a hurry, I've got a...

    Compression too high?

I've considered this. The PH isn't salty but it had evidence of overheating. Maybe the VRO failed and it ran oil-starved. One of the crank journals is worn down, that piston was cracked, the cylinders unsurprisingly scored. When I started adding up costs a used PH in good condition sounded like...

    Compression too high?

That's my thought, skeptical ... it's a fair price, $1K shipped from Fl. Cheaper than most used complete outboards with this PH. The seller appears to be an outboard service business. Priced as-is but since he put it out there as 155 even compression it can be considered a guarantee. Could be...

    Compression too high?

I'm looking at a '97 E70TLE powerhead to replace my failed '01 J70PLSIS powerhead. My concern is their purported compression is 155 on all three cylinders. Is that high for a used PH? I don't have the compression specs for that PH but most info I've found seems to put good compression at about...

1981 Mercury 75hp water pump question

Here is a picture of that area on the pump housing that was removed. You can see the imprint of that raised area and the scraps of gasket.. The earlier picture I posted of a new OEM pump base was to show there is no apparent indent to allow for this "step". The gasket is flat, so no allowance...

I would like to know what that area is. One more marked up picture to be absolutely clear.

1981 Mercury 75hp water pump question

@racerone @Chris1956 Any idea why that "protrusion" exists near the bolt where the "paper" gasket will be laid? The pump that came out has marks from that raised area. It would seem to me that without an absolutely flat mating surface the gasket isn't going to do it's job, or worse it slightly...

1981 Mercury 75hp water pump question

My apologies, 70hp. Sn is correct. Not the o ring groove, the flat surface that will have a "paper" gasket under the flat surface of the pump base. Enlarge the first picture and you'll see the raised area in front of the bolt. That raised section looks like it will hold the base slightly off the...
