Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

OMC used pressurized 2-line fuel tanks from 1949 on the Johnson 10, through 1959 on the 5½, 10 & 18 (the 7½ was gone after '58). The "deluxe" 35s (Lark, Golden Javelin) used a fuel pump, & by '59 all 35s used it as well. The OMC Accessory catalogues showed that pressurized fuel tanks were still...

    1960 Evinrude 5.5 fisherman outboard

If you are interested you may be well served by joining an antique outboard club. If you have a local chapter it can be advantageous for getting a line on a good "kicker". I have picked up unadvertised motors that way. So thieves stole your dad's original motor. I hate thieves. Decades ago a...

Gale 7.5hp Montgomery Ward Sea King

Montgomery Ward used Chrysler outboards once Gale / Buccaneer pulled the plug. Did they ever use Eska outboard in the 1970s?

Vintage OMC fuel tank rebuild ..

For OMC parts if you are in Canada I have always had good luck with Durham Marine in Pickering, Ontario. They even work on old stuff, as evidenced by seeing a 9½ turtleback in the shop when I was there.

    FICHT after 20 years...

Not that the FICHT was a bad concept, it was that random part throttle lean-out. I friend of mine would perform what he called "The 10,000 r.p.m. Tune-Up", I've also heard it called "The Italian Tune-up". I little different animal, but I remember buying a '68 Mustang convertible in Atlanta...

    Johnson 5hp

A TN-28 (1952½-53) uses those coils and the regular automotive type breaker points. The older T-series, including the TD-10 & 20, plus TN-25 through TN-27 use the old guillotine style points.

Electric boat maker shutters plant in WV

Remind me why we are doing this again. Re-inventing the wheel, that is.

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

Inline spark testers could show electrical continuity but nothing more, while an open air spark tester will show whether the ignition will fire under great resistance, in other words real operating conditions.

    Johnson TN28 no low-speed fuel

At low speed, in theory the carburetor doesn't even come into play, it is just the low speed mixture valve. Rotary valve 2-strokes are different. Your motor is a bronze bushed motor. That means it had very tight, hand-reamed tolerances when built. It also means the bearing can't be replaced, so...

Can you paint an outboard cowling with automotive spray paint?

If you are talking about spray bombing it, then yes you could. It just won't be anywhere as durable as a catalyzed paint from a spray gun. If you don't have a spray gun, I have heard of catalyzed paint in a 2-part spray can. Paint it up like an early to mid-70s Chrysler! :)

    Anybody have "old" pontoons?

I always loved this picture from the 1974 Johnson brochure of a new 15 horse pushing a 20' pontoon boat:

Starting an 57 Evinrude 7.5 fleet win after many many years of storage.

I did not know that! I figured by the time for 1965 they became 6 horsepower in the 50:1 era they would have bearing races. The 3 & 4 horse motors (which I love) were bronze bushed through 1977. I'd love a fully-jewelled '78 as the '79s began with European-style integral gas tanks (in use in...

Starting an 57 Evinrude 7.5 fleet win after many many years of storage.

Yes, don't skimp on the oil in the gas. The Fleetwin is a bronze bushed motor and it needs the oil. They called for 16:1 oil/gas ratio back in the day when you would mix straight 30 weight non-detergent automotive oil in with the gas. Really old tech. You might get away with 24:1 mix with modern...

    1966 Johnson 9.5hp (MQ-12A)

The early motors with the shaking that Crosbyman was referring to are the 1964/65 models. Dad had a '65 from new & later had it retrofitted with a special "Vibration Isolation Kit" installed at the dealer waaayy back. I've piloted many 9½ OMC turtlebacks but dad's well-used motor was actually...
