I have a 1980 Johnson 9.9 that was running great this summer, started easily and ran strong. Then last outing it quit suddenly.
Tried it again today, started up but died after a few seconds, then no spark at all.
Is there a sensible way to trouble shoot that ignition system? I could track it...
This winter I picked up a 1972 2hp Evinrude, Model 2202M. It starts and runs great, but while it's running it pulls the speed lever over to stop. The level doesn't move unless the motor is running. It takes a noticeable amount of force to hold it running with my finger.
Is there something I can...
I have a ~1960 Lone Star Malibu that's long overdue for a coat of paint (maybe the trailer needs paint too :embarassed:).
One thing holding me back is fear of damaging the emblems when removing them. They appear to be held on by studs that are pressed thru the skin. Is it safe to gently tap the...
Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.
Would this actually work? (Aside from the concern that I'd probably flip it trying to get the motor started).

Okay, this is copart rather than craigslist. But some people take "As Is" to a new level...

Re: 1956 30hp timing question
There should be timing marks on the flywheel and cam (the "thingie"?). Here's a picture of my 1963 18HP motor, when the piston is at TDC and the mark on the advance is at the cam roller all three are lined up (flywheel timing mark, cam zero advance mark, and cam...
Noticed this on CL, just wondering what the heck it is. Would it really be stainless? Or aluminum with a clueless seller?

Re: 18hp Johnson project
It seems the previous owner had some trouble getting it started. Everything under the flywheel was in good shape, but the worn wires grounded the ignition out. Apparently he just kept yanking on the starter rope:
It must have run good at some point though, because...
I picked up an FD-17 motor a couple of weeks ago as a winter project - 1963 Johnson 18HP. It was a toss-in on a craigslist ad: "Boat and motor w/o titles $300 - plus extra 18hp motor goes along". The other motor was a late '50s 35hp Evinrude but the seller had changed his mind and decided to...
Merc 200 20 HP SN 4585788 I bought last fall - indicator stream was weak, intermittent, and very hot. The impeller looked good but I found the remains of another impeller in the water pump and tube; kind of surprised that any water at all was getting through. Someone replaced an impeller that...
I picked up a few older outboards this fall for no particular reason, just thought they would be fun to try. Today was finally warm enough here in PA to fill a trash can and see what I have.
First up was a McCulloch 7.5hp made in 1968, I picked it up at an auction for $65. It had a good spark...
Sometimes I don't know how she catches on, sometimes she misses the obvious. Before I bought our first rowboat she caught me out in the yard painting a pair of oars. Later she mentioned that it seemed odd that I was painting oars when we didn't even own a boat...as far as she knew.
