The newer detents were machined differently so the detent ball can easily step up out of that notch for neutral. From what I've read, it makes a pretty big difference from those who have made the switch.
I even checked the evinrude/johnson 300hp outboard lower unit. They kept the same detent as the baby king all way up through '95 or '96.
I'll just replace the wiper and oring and put it all back together
Hey Lou,
No, the 2 OEM part numbers were different, which is why I knew it was going to be a dumb question. Wishful thinking on my part. Just wondering why they never upgraded the Baby king detent.
Hey everyone,
Back again with another question about my engine/outdrive combo. Always appreciate the feedback get from you all. I have a '89 460 King cobra and was experiencing some hard shifting issues.
Every time I'd go out the my outdrive would be stuck in neutral and I'd have to work...
The grommet on the starboard side of the ypipe came loose and the pin was driving into the inner wall of the y pipe. I'd have to sand down the damage and do some work with some JB weld to make it fit again. Also the flapper on the starboard side was stuck open. I had to give it a good amount...
Thanks for the input. I do want to have some sort of flappers because I have to go in reverse a lot backing up to lobster nets and sometimes that swell is strong and I could see it going too far up the y pipe.
I just dont see these style of exhaust flapper below the water line and wonder if...
Hey everyone, I have a 89 460 7.5L King Cobra. Was just doing some general maintenance taking off the risers and manifolds when I noticed that one exhaust flapper was broken. The little rod moved from its bushing and dug itself into the inner wall of the y pipe. The other flapper on the other...
It was definitely the carb. After messing with it so many times and wasting time going down to the boat in this LA traffic we figured we just bite the bullet and buy a brand new carb. The carb was undersized at 650 cfm anyways. Ended up getting a pretty good deal on a 770 cfm marine holley...
I thought about that but everything seemed to work fine the past couple of years. Maybe a backfire here and there but wasn't a huge issue. The jets are the size specified in the manual.
I've only made a couple changes from last year to now.
1) Lowered fuel level in both fuel bowls because...
Adjusted the float levels yesterday. Fuel now sits above recommended levels to allow for more fuel. Did not fix the problem. Still backfires. If anything it backfires around 2900 rpm, so the problem got worse. But we also have 2 extra bodies in the boat this time. At this point I'm ready...
forgot to mention. I had a spare coil and swapped that out before trying any of the above mentioned changes. I wanted to make sure it wasn't my ig coil. Both coils would backfire at 2800 rpm. So the coil was not at fault for the backfire. Also found out I was getting about 10 volts to the...
I have an update.
I was thinking about buying a rebuilt carburetor. The 650 cfm that is on my engine currently is supposedly undersized. The original carb was a 750 cfm. Before making the purchase I decided to look over the problems one more time since the engine did fine last year with the...
