Just to close this thread out for now I’m booking the boat in to get a new coupler. I’m tired of chasing things in my driveway if you know what I mean. I will start a new thread in the spring and perhaps reference this one when I found out the result. Thanks everyone for your help.
The play is between the SS rod and the gimbal ring. Not sure it would cause a growl only when turning. Just noticed it and wondered if it is normal or not.
Oh sorry I guess the trim cylinders attach to the gimbal ring not the transom. There are bushings between the trim cylinders and the pivot shaft but nothing where the shaft goes through the gimbal ring.
Did some checking tonight on muffs. First video is the coupler at idle. The coupler doesn’t appear to wobble but you can hear an intermittent knocking sound. After feeling around I think it’s the exhaust flaps but open to ideas
Second video is the coupler at high idle. Knocking is not as...
I can’t hear it from the wheel but the boat mechanic said he could hear something standing at the rear of the boat. I will listen tonight with someone at the wheel and maybe take another video. I can’t imagine how the ps system could make this noise but I can watch the rack when doing my...
I’m learning this. . Last night I dialed in alignment with grease on the alignment tool and confirmed with an old yoke. I learned that even if the tool slides in smoothly it doesn’t mean it’s aligned. Grease and the yoke don’t lie.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll watch the coupler in the water. I can definitely see the coupler and I may be able to see the shaft. With the overall condition of the boat I’m confident in the structure.
Below is a link to a coupler test with an aluminum bar. The tolerance is +\- 0.012” on the bar so it’s not the tightest fit in the coupler. In any case it seems to wobble quite a bit. Does this look normal to you guys? Would the flex in the rubber make up for this set or would this cause...
In the water today and it’s no better. When my tool arrives I’ll check the drive shaft bearing. Otherwise I’m leaning toward a bad coupler. I didn’t have 1” round bar at home so I used a piece of thin wall tube to check the coupler. Unfortunately I don’t think the tube is very true but it...
I took a look at this today. I’m still waiting on the castle nut wrench to arrive so I focused on the coupler and alignment instead of checking the drive shaft bearing. I found that one front motor mount was adjusted lower than the other but a fair bit which I imagine may put a twist in the...
