Regular maintenance - change just the impeller or entire housing too?

It's not so much the actual cost price, but rather also the wastage if unnecesary. But it would seem that opinions on this topic vary greatly. I am fond of racerone's idea of having a complete kit on the shelf for 'if needed' and dingbat's data driven method by monitoring/testing the water pumps...

Regular maintenance - change just the impeller or entire housing too?

Each to their own, but if I've gone to the effort of accessing the impeller I'd replace it - especially after 10 years. Rubber has a limited lifespan.

Regular maintenance - change just the impeller or entire housing too?

This outboard is used in saltwater only but low number of hours a year - probably only about 8 - 10 hours annually.

Regular maintenance - change just the impeller or entire housing too?

As part of regular maintenance I understand that the water pump impeller should be changed at annually/at the start of each season. Should the whole housing unit be replaced with it, or just the impeller by itself? The particular motor in question is a 2001 Mercury 115HP Saltwater but I'd...

Yamaha FT60BET timing belt replacement questions, hints and tips

No one has done their own timing belt on one or these or similar motors then? My main concern at the moment is holding the crankshaft when undoing.

Yamaha FT60BET timing belt replacement questions, hints and tips

Looking to do the timing belt on the FT60BET that we have here. Don't know the service history but it's been in use with us for 5 or so years at least now so likely due on age at least. I've read through the relevant section of the F50F FT50G F60G FT60D Service Manual that I have here (I...

06 Merc MA30ELH motor lock not locking so can't reverse as motor pulls up

I have a 2006 Mercury MA 30 ELH two-stroke 30HP outboard here that came on an aluminium boat purchased from a deceased estate (don't mind the spider webs, they've been cleaned up now. It started first time despite not being used for a while). I'm having trouble with not being able to lock the...

Antenna differences for AM/FM and 27 MHz?

Currently have a 27 MHz radio and an AM/FM stereo receiver for music. The boat has two antenna bases - 27 MHz on the port side and AM/FM on the starboard. I have the two antenna's to suit but am unable to identify which is which as the labels have faded beyond readable. There are some slight...

    What size battery for boat/outboard?

I've got a fairly simple 5.2m fibreglass runabout fitted with a 2002 Mercury 115HP Salt Water series outboard (four cylinder, quad carby, oil injection, 2 stroke) outboard motor. Aside from the motor, there's very little in the way of electronics on it - an old fish finder and a radio for...

CHIRP Sonar - some assistance with understanding the different types please

I have been using an Apple iPad with Navionics for navigations and GPS functionality when out. I recently noticed that Navionics app on the iPad has the capability to integrate with some of the sonar modules and through the information on the Navionics site, soon found myself looking at the...

Yamaha FT60BET Replacement Trim and Tilt Motor and fluid/oil

Anyone able to assist with the correct part number for a replacement Trim and Tilt Electric motor to suit a Yamaha FT60BET (4 stroke) outboard? In addition, what is the recommended fluid/oil to use in the hydraulic ram system?

Yamaha FT60BET - engine compression specifications and leaking carburettors

We have recently purchased a Yamaha FT60BET (4 stroke) outboard which has been in storage for approximately the last eight years. It seems that the outboard was used commercially in it's early years and likely was on a vessel which rarely left the water. Removed the spark plugs and dropped a...

2001 Mercury 115HP Saltwater - which hole should the gearbox oil come out of?

Today I drained and refilled the oil in the gearbox on my 2001 Mercury 115HP Saltwater outboard. I refilled it from the bottom drain hole using a hand pump. I undid both top plugs (one is marked 'VENT' and the other 'OIL LEVEL'). When refilling the oil came out of the VENT hole not the OIL LEVEL...

Converting 2001 Mercury Salt Water Series from 2 cylinder idle to 4 cylinder idle?

I have a 2002 Mercury 115HP Salt Water series outboard (four cylinder, quad carby, oil injection, 2 stroke). My biggest complaint with the motor is that it idles on only two cylinders (this a Mercury system - not an engine fault) which results in both a rough idle and rough take off when...

2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water series - difficulty sustaining idle - fouling spark plu

My 2001 Mercury 115HP Salt Water Series (2 stroke 4 cylinder carby self mixing oil outboard) has recently been serviced and carbs tuned - it starts very easily and runs as well as ever. It idles reasonably well too (it's the model that drops to 2 cylinders for idle so sounds a bit rough as to be...
