Starting engine without thermostats and thermostat covers off.

I am replacing the thermostats and pressure relief valves as a maintenance procedure on my 150 Johnson model#J150tlcur. I noticed some crystals under the pressure relief valves; probably salt crystals since I run in both salt and fresh water. What, if anything would it hurt if I put the muffs...

As stated above I need to remove the steering link from the steering arm on the engine. The question is the bolt that attaches the link to the motor a tapered bolt or is it just forced into the steering arm and is tough to remove? I had rather not tear something up getting the two seperated...

My torque wrench is in foot pouds and my manual calls for 168 inch pounds; is this the same as 14 foot pounds? 168/12= 14. Don't want to mess things up.

Primer bulb before or after fuel/water separator

I recently installed a fuel/water separator and put the primer bulb before it since my instructions didn't mention anything about placement. It's done the same way my neighbor has his and hasn't any problems. I've run mine on the muffs and also on a lake with a 7MPH limit, no problem starting...

    Questions about old Evinrude

I have been given an old Evinrude"Elto" out board, model 4256- 03691. I was told that this is a 1935 engine of unknown HP. Is it a 1935 and what is the HP? Also, is it water cooled; no water entrances, It runs but seems to get very hot. What would the oil/gas ratio be?
