    1960 Johnson 40 hp wont's stay running

At it again trying to get this motor running right. Rebuilt ignition, new plug wires, checked gap on points, rebuilt carb, replaced carb in case I didn't rebuild right, new water pump, new hoses, new head gasket. Runs better but won't stay running, after about 5 seconds it cuts out. Happens...

    Would a 1962 lower unit fit a 1960?

As I understand it a lot of the johnson part are interchangeable. To make sure I thought I'ld ask the experts. Would a 1962 40 hp shortshaft lower unit fit a 1960 40 hp (rds-22)? Both are manual shift. Thanks for the input.

Very new to the outboard thing so forgive the question if it seems stupid but... Can you use automotive spark plug wires on an old (1960 40 hp) outboard?

    Back to basics

1960 Johnson 40 hp, rds-22 engine. Have changed plugs, plug wires, coils, condensers and points. Rebuilt carb and changed lines. Finally got through a overheat prob (separate post), running a test again and trying to trying to adjust idle. Found out by pulling plug caps to test spark that I'm...

    Need help identifying gas/oil leak

When checking some other stuff on a 1960 Johnson 40 hp seahorse I noticed what looks to be an oil/gas leak on the head cover. Image attached. At first I though maybe leaking around the spark plug but upon closer inspection maybe it could be around the compression release valve. I recently had...

One cylinder running hotter than other

Engine is a 1960 40 hp Johnson, posted a couple times now. Newbie so I can use all the help I can get. Could a missing thermostat make the top cylinder run hotter, or even over heat, while the lower looks ok? Had an overheating prob so checked the thermostat, found there wasn't one. Ordered...

    1960 40 hp Johnson

Was going to pull the thermostat on the above engine since I thought it might be running hot, once I got the thermostat cover off I found a plastic sleeve and under that a half moon looking plug on a spring. I just want to make sure this is correct, except for the missing thermostat that is. I'm...

    1960 40hp Super Seahorse

Before the questions I just want to say a million thanks to all the folks that contribute to this forum. A month ago I would have never thought I could have got this old motor going again but with this forum and a lot of stubbornness she's back alive. Now, that said, I'm still having some...

Anyone EDIT can point me in the right direction to find one? Also, would it be safe to run w/ just one clamp?

    1960 40 hp Johnson backfires, won't start

First posting but have received a lot of useful info from this site. Thank you for that. Have a 1960 40 hp johnson, don't know the history of this engine. Person I bought from said it had run "a while" back, but wasn't sure when. Electric start, thank goodness. Changed points, condenser, coils...
