    Merc 850 Carb Differences

Does anyone have any idea what the differences were between the 1975 and before Tillotson carbs for these engines and the 1976 & up mercarbs? I'm wondering if they can be interchanged, and if so was one larger or smaller than the other? Thanks all.

    Adding Power Trim

Re: Adding Power Trim There are two different sized of shafts on the hydraulic cylinders. I'll check in my selock manual (has limited uses but this is one of them) and post the two sizes shortly. <Edit> Wrong place to look. The two sizes of "piston rods" on these cylinders are 3/4" and 1"...

    gas leak at full tilt.

I was out on the weekend and had to beach momentarily. The water was very shallow so I ran the tilt on my Merc 850 up full. I have no limit switch and I'm not sure if that's supposed to limit upward or downward tilt? At any rate after a few minutes there was gas leaking from the power head...

    Compression.. Thoughts?

SO I finally rebuilt every other flippin part of this motor (Merc 850) and here is how the power head looks after running and then cooling down some: 130 145 140 145 I know the other 3 are fine, but how suspect is that #1 cylinder? Would you run it like that?

    Merc 850 Shift shaft

So I've now gone though my Seloc manual power head section twice, and there seems to be no description pf power head re installation so I'm wondering if there is a simple way or a standard procedure to align the shift shaft? Currently the gear case is in neutral. TIA for any useful help!

    Hull Hook Repair

Re: Hull Hook Repair Hmmm so effectively using the balsa as a form to extend the hull out, that could work. I may even have some Styrofoam (intended for that purpose) I can use. Either way it's a viable alternative for sure, though that may be considerably more work? Last night I revised my...

    Hull Hook Repair

I have an old Chrysler tri hull I've been rebuilding for a number of years. I had it on the water for two seasons when I discovered something nasty. Because it sat for years with the transom hanging over the bunks of the trailer and had a large O/B motor installed. The transom sagged by about...

    L/U Zinc Anode

I've noticed there is a second set of threads at the prop end of the lower unit casing on my merc 850, outside the spanner nut. I'm wondering if they're there for mounting a zinc anode of sorts? I've tried to find one and nothing seems available, yet it would seem a perfect spot for one. Am I...

    Simple Skeg alignment question

Should the an outboard's skeg be perfectly in line with the remainder of the lower unit? Or does it have a slight angle to offset for prop spin? I'm guessing there should be no angle but I just want to confirm this before I start persuasive surgery. (Rubber Mallet) :D

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit Thought I would post come pics of the crank with the seal sleeve (saver) installed. Note the nasty corrosion on the bottom of the lower end cap. Thankfully it had not effected anything inside or beyond the seals, nor around the seal seats. I debated getting that built...
