The other day my youngest calls to tell me she was awarded the Department of Defense's NDSEG (National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program Fellowship)(Applicants are accepted at a less than a 5% acceptance rate). This fellowship will fully fund her PhD program while paying her a living wage stipend. Then 2 days later she tells me she also won the NSF (National Science Foundation) Graduate Fellowship Program (very similar parameters). I believe she will be accepting the one from the DoD. Both fellowships would fully fund her PhD program. She is a happy camper! (and I am a proud pappa!) BTW, she is coming to the close of her first year in the Polymer Science and Engineering PhD program at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

For other old fogies like me that only know what civil, electrical, mechanical, and railroad engineers do;

"Polymer science and engineering is a multidisciplinary STEM field focused on this special class of molecules. Polymer materials are ubiquitous in almost every aspect of modern life, and advances in the field enable scientific and technological breakthroughs in a wide range of technical applications."

Congrats to her
