The Tampa Bay Rays have been using Steinbrenner Field in Tampa ever since Tropicana Field was destroyed in a hurricane last year.

I'm seeing a booth behind the home plate umpire (outlined in red in the pic) and I don't know what it's for or what the dude inside is doing there. I've seen a variety of guys in there, but no cameras, microphones or other such paraphernalia.

It appears to have a gated entrance in the rear and a plastic window in front.

Any ideas?

I always assumed it was the official scorer, but have no actual clue.

Perhaps a selected / privileged season ticket holder.-----Or a study on many bad " ball / strike " calls are made.-----An AI experiment evaluating pitches / strike calls.----Cameras / sensors could be mounted in that blue rectangle.

I still haven't found an answer. I've only seen this cage at Steinbrenner field. 🤷‍♂️

I found this funny answer online. :ROFLMAO:

Well, other folks have had the same question and have provided answers. The guy is part of the MLB Replay Review Team.

Here's an AI summary.

And a pic of the guy's hat.

And there are a couple of cameras on either side of the booth. Likely zoom cameras aiming at Home Plate and whatnot.
