Warranty ( Or buying from a trusted individual ) can have a bearing on price.-----If you buy a motor as is where is ( $400 ) and need to take it in for work it adds up quick.----Water pump service / ignition module / carburetor service / fuel pump can add up to $500 or more at a big shop.-----That is if you can find a shop willing to work on older motors.

IMO, based on recent motor searching . . . good working condition $400-500 . . . . Needing some work $300-350

"Good running" are the key words. I also look on how it was treated
from pristine to banged up. Can you do a run test or as is ..? tank or no tank ...around my way $ 500 cdn seems ok for a good running, clean 1980s grandpa motor if you are patient.

I am not buying much motors now but last week I saw a superb Merc 4hp that looked like it came out of a crate selling for $250 cdn !! Things is I have 2x3hp 2 x 4hp (one an XL sailor) 1x green CD11 1x Johnson white 5.5 , 1x9.5

I’ll get the compression numbers. Comes with a tank and fuel line. The original paint looks nice and it’s for sale in southern Michigan. Thanks

Southern Michigan could cause an increase in value if close to lake Erie or lake Michigan as these are often used as kicker motors on larger lake boats. That might add a couple hundred at best, however bottom line is condition ! There are lots of words to describe a motor but what that means to each person can be different.

Anywhere from 300 to 1000 depending on condition and geographic location

My neck of the woods (Indy) Id say around 650-800 is average for a running motor. One with a warranty from the "motor guy" in town is about 1200.
