Rebuilding my Mercruiser 470 and I'm to the point of installing the oil pump.
Should I use a small amount of sealer between the oil pump and block?

I would not put sealant that could get squeezed into the oil passages and potentially block flow ...

Will priming the oil pump/system with an old distributor shaft pump up the hydraulic lifters?
not really, however soaking the lifters in oil overnight is recommended to pre-filling. Then when using a priming tool, or cranking the lifters should pump up a bit.

are these new lifters and a new cam? If so, make sure you get the break in right

or are these used lifters? if used, did you keep the lifters matched to their cam lobes?

New lifter set
When I spun the engine on the stand I had forgotten all about the lifters and 4 fell out and landed on the floor and I couldn't tell which hole that came from. Couldn't number them for the exact hole so decided to get new and not risk destroying the the Very expensive camshaft. I will soak them overnight an prime them once ready to fire the engine up.
