Not sure how to go about setting the timing as the tab is completely deteriorated. Any suggestions? 1989 four winns horizon. GM 4.3 with omc cobra outdrive.

EDIT- Can I find TDC and then mark the block/balancer then use a timing light with advance?

you can - use a piston stop, then paint a line on the timing cover. I would use a proper sized timing tape vs an advance light. however you have some serious rust on that damper, and the timing cover. it looks like a rust hole just about thru in the pic

I would pull the accessory drive off the motor and wire brush the rust, then get some paint and put a coat of paint on there.

Sounds good, I was going to use a whistle as I have never used a piston stop. Are they more reliable? That isn't rusted through just the image. I inherited this boat am just trying to get it running smooth. Thanks!

If you want to find TDC accurately, you need a piston stop and degree wheel.

That is engine 101

I'm not familiar with a degree wheel. Can you point me to a resource on how to find TDC with a piston stop and degree wheel? I'm a shade tree mechanic and did not take engine 101.
