You might be very sorry when a electronic system has a problem.
Points only 2 parts to change and adjust. Buy a few spare hold down screws if you drop small parts.

Was wondering if I take the flywheel and coils off from under my 1985 30 horse, the CDI unit and the wiring harness and it might all work. But maybe it doesn't work that way

OMC used a few different Ignition Systems on that lineage of Motor. The Low Tension System used on the 76 model is quite Reliable and easy to service, and Service Parts are easy to attain. Those neat Electronic Boxes on later Motors, are not serviceable and require replacement when they fail, and as most owners will agree, Not Cheap.

Along a similar path the early 9.9/15hp motors used points. By 1977 these were Breakerless CD. By the 90s owners of these engine were asking if they could convert them to Points Ignitions for the Reason mentioned

Yeah ....well she's running good but I've got lots of cdi 2's laying around and when I get some time I going to convert it. Need to convert to the red plug anyways....

Right now the two blue wires aren't shutting it off, only way to kill it is to choke it.
