Hello, here is one that is new for anyone, we are desperate for info. My son accidentally broke off a piece about 1 - 1 1/2 inches long of a zip tie in the top vent hole of our motor. We can see it but cannot reach it through the vent hole. My best estimate we need to drop the lower and proceed to uncork the impeller plate and so on and hope and pray we can get to it and just needle nose or forcep it out any watchouts also ? I cannot find anything specific enough for how to disconnect the linkage on our particular motor. We have a trip coming up soon and this is hinging on this.... the Motor is 2003 Johnson 90hp 4 stroke - model j90pl4st. any advice or help is GREATLY appreciated....

Adding...or will it just get chewed up and I should cycle through changes hoping the debris gets out?

I believe most of us are trying to figure out what a top vent hole is.
If it just goes into the engine cowling, wouldn't it be simple to remove the engine cowling and remove the foreign object?

Not sure what hole but how about another, longer zip tie with a dab of hot melt glue or crazy glue. Folded over thin piece of wire might also work.

"" the top vent hole ""

The exhaust relief port on the back side of the midsection ??????

""uncork the impeller plate"" ????

Not sure what that means, but yes, drop the gear case and have a look around. Might as well install a new impeller while you have it opened up.
