Mileage is a meaningless unit of measure around here.

It’s all about time as illustrated by the prolific use of variable (time) tolling in the area. Have seen tolls as high as $45 to go 12 miles.

Gee Lou, I live on the Jersey shore, not far from you climate-wise. The 6" of snow we received a few days ago was the most in 4 years. In years past, we had weeks of slush and cold rains here, but it has been less and less over the years. Heck, we hardly even get rain in the summer, and not a lot in the fall and winter.

I have some neighbors that move to Florida from Jan thru April. The weather is nice there during that time. However, it gets pretty hot and nasty by June.

For me the best thing is to stay in jersey, and have some hobbies slated for winter. At the rate it seems to be headed, cold weather will lessen each year, and the heat will ramp up. I do need to wear 2 sweatshirts to work outside in the winter, but it is a small deprivation.

Now, if you live in Montana, your analysis could be different.

I will NEVER Travel to the US. Once back in 1983 was more than enough

Really? I’m curious why you say that. The United States has a lot to offer. Not sure where you were, but I’ve traveled extensively in the states and there is something for everyone here. Not only climate, scenery, and terrain, but cultural as well.

Yes ,there does appear to be a lot of something for everyone in the US.......but I would not set foot in the place .

I could not live in Fla year round, too hot but I have had it with NY:
property taxes ($13,000+ for a small house)
unaffordable housing market for youngsters--bad for a generation of young people
high cost for fuel, electricity and insurance (although not as bad as Fla and Cali)
4 months of lousy weather
constant moisture rots vehicles and old school wood/glass boats
My cousins all moved from Brooklyn to NJ, they are generally happy there although I could see them leaving when all are retired as well.
My aunt (94 years young) wishes she never sold her house in Brooklyn, it's now about a million lol.

Well, just heard another winter storm is heading toward Jersey this weekend!
I‘m visiting family in Cape May but installed 4 winter tires before leaving home. Merry Christmas!

Lou, I hear you about the island of long. I attended Stonybrook for 3 years, and nearly worked for Grumman after graduation. I was concerned then about the taxes and the need to drive thru Queens/Brooklyn to escape from LI if for vacation or if some sort of disaster.

I did not mind the weather, however.

That's where I'm originally from and it's the same reasons my parents left... though I will say if you're up in the northern area of NJ you may as well live in NY since it's nearly as expensive.

We went out for a funeral a few weeks ago. Few observations... it's 98 miles. The drive took almost 6 hours. Fuel was surprisingly 10-20 cents cheaper at that time on the island which never was the case. Beyond that, while I have fond memories of the area and the old neighborhood is beautiful... I'm glad I'm not out there anymore. Just too many people.

I have lived here for about 44 years, before that Westchester county for about 12 and before that Brooklyn as a child (1958-1968).
Long Island's peak IMO was in the late 60s early 70s when Grumman and Republic still had a lot of high paying jobs and taxes (real estate) were not out of control like they are now. The problem with our aerospace industry was that they were 100% dependent on government contracts. Republic tried to get into civilian aviation with a 4 engined turboprop but the airlines weren't interested. I wonder what would have happened if Grumman had bought Republic instead of Fairchild. I think a lot of it is politics. The bad is the groundwater issue. It will take approx 100 years to clean up what was left behind (industrial solvents). It affects much of Nassau County. I think anyone who lives here should have at least a reverse osmosis water filter. We have a whole house water filtering system.
Very few people today realize Long Island's contribution to the WW2 war effort. Probably close to 30,000 planes were built here by both Grumman (Navy) and Republic (USAAF).
If you don't mind the lousy winter weather and taxes, not a bad place to live, boating is excellent where I live, everything from quiet bays/harbors to Long Island Sound.....

Where did you go to in the US?
I have been to Canada many times all for the F1 Race in Montreal, always had a good time there, people were always friendly even though my French is pretty limited.
