Ok thanks I just wanted to double check. I just checked a lower unit from the top drain plug screw to see if it had gear oil inside. Planning to just put a new washer on and re install the plug.
You could also replace the bottom one , as long as the top screw is sealed there will only be a slight dribble come out when you remove the bottom screw. You should remove the bottom screw in any case as if there is any water in the lower unit it will come out first ........not a good thing but your better off knowing .Ok thanks I just wanted to double check. Ya I plan on replacing all 3 lower unit washers when I change the gear oil. I just bought this outboard and the seller said he wasn’t sure if he drained the gear oil out or not which confused me so I wanted to check it and at least see if it had oil which it did.You could also replace the bottom one , as long as the top screw is sealed there will only be a slight dribble come out when you remove the bottom screw. I appreciate the information. I’ve done many lower unit oil changes always with the outboard vertical and always replace my drain plug washers with new ones. In this particular case I just wanted to make sure that this outboard was stored by its previous owner with gear oil and wanted to reuse the drain plug washer while I had it stored outside in the rain. I just wanted to make sure that reusing that washer would not cause any rain water to leak in while it sat outside while I ordered new washers from marineengine to change the lower unit oil. Thank you againNot knowing your experience with the subject, the engine needs to be vertical. The drain and vent screw(s) need to be removed. The pump equipped bottle of fluid is better as you can do a better/easier job. WM. sells the Mercury/Quicksilver LU lube in such a quart bottle and it's good for all their engines. You stick the hose/adapter in the drain hole and start pumping. When you get solid oil out the vent hole(s), without removing the fill hose, install the vent screw(s) with new (blue is better) fiber washers. Then remove the fill tube and quickly install the drain plug with new washer.
Yeah I doubt it too. Washers would have to be complete junk. Well that gives me better peace of mindI doubt that rain water can get in , even with used washers !
