Hi, my neighbour has an issue on his motor where it blew a hole in the side of his leg and cowling where exhaust is coming out. We have been told it is because of Yamaha using recycled aluminum. He always maintains his motor when service is due and never abuses the motor. Anyone else have or heard of this?
Thanks, Rob

There are corrosion issues on some motors.---Have seen it more than once.----Rarely see those issues on domestic motors

Ya, seen motors with major corrosion because they don’t maintain them. His is clean. Anodes done every year and he did the 500 service last year and the internal anodes were in great shape.

I wonder if the newer motors are made cheaper and with shitty metals like newer aluminum boats. Some have been made way cheaper.

hell my 1999 C40 developed a hole next to the stat some years ago that I had welded up.
I always flushed with fresh water after coming in from fishing salt water
what are you calling newer motors?

Have seen corrosion on some motors ( fresh water ) , never saw this corrosion on Johson / Evinrude motors.----Cheaper material I think.

The cylinder head on my neighbors 200HP HDPI Yammie rotted out, allowing water into the cylinder. I for one, do not think that should happen.

Are you saying that you think it should not happen?

Why is that when in fact it (and so much other stuff that we wish to not happen) is in reality happening. Everywhere. All the time.

I was going to suggest the OP look at the THT site also, there are numerous posts about this ongoing problem. I wonder why someone hasn't tried suing Yamaha since it seems to be a known ongoing problem.
See www.thehulltruth.com
very long thread on this and similar problems
apparently not as common on Mercury or Evinrude but they have other issues.

Yes I think Yamaha cylinder heads should not rot out. There are thousands of much older Johnnyrudes and Mercs that do not have that issue. The early 60's Johnnyrudes even recommended you not flush them after saltwater use.

I think Yamaha should use more durable aluminum alloys, like OMC figured out in the 50's.

Thanks for all the replies. Yamaha has reached out and I am communicating with them. Taking pics of the issue and sending to them. Let’s see if they will help my buddy. I have a 2011 F250XCA that has been great except an VST filter housing issue that I think froze at some point before I got it. (I’m 2nd owner from a buddy) Only 660 hrs on it and I maintain above normal.

If indeed Yamaha (and maybe Suzuki and Honda) are using aluminum alloys that don't seem to be as durable (from a corrosion standpoint) as the alloys used by other motor makers, I would think those companies are smart enough to be using the alloys they use for a particular reason, or reason.

I wish the reason(s) were known.

Well got the standard BS email from Yamaha after sending pictures of how clean this motor is with no corrosion. I was trying to help my buddy who was diagnosed with Cancer regarding this issue that Yamaha should deal with. Next step is a few TIKTOK videos of the manufacturing defect.

Hello Rob,
Thank you for the information. We do not show any recalls or service bulletins for this unit. It looks clean. Additionally, we show that the warranty expired 7 years ago, so it is not eligible for any repair assistance.
We appreciate you taking the time to send the information over.
Regards,
Joel

What was the manufacturing defect? If the motor worked fine for roughly 10 years it seems a defect from the factory would have reared its ugly head years and years ago.

It is not a manufacturer's job to look after a product they sold long ago and for which they have no control over how it was maintained, or not maintained.

Car makers have no control over a vehicle driven on salt covered roads.---People who do this accept the demise of the $80,000 truck.----Known fact that if the product leaves the showroom floor there is no need to improve it.

The reality with Yamaha outboard corrosion is that it happens on engines that are a lot less than 10 years old and sometimes less than 500 hrs. If people see that happening with one brand but not with others (Mercury for example, which sells probably as much as Yamaha in the US) then that makes people feel that it's a "defect" even though it's not happening during the warrantee period. The fact that it's happened to many Yamaha owners sparked a class action lawsuit, not sure if it went anywhere but that's the extent of it. Yet, people still buy them! Still the most common outboard I see around here!
