    Wooden stringers

Cypress would be excellent as far as durability. It’s an oily wood so I don’t know how well resin would stick to it. But it’s about as expensive as buying gold. Lol. If you can find it.

When coating edges I can use just straight poly. No glass, until I get ready to tab it in?

    Wooden stringers

Believe me I have looked high and low for marine grade plywood here. I am from Shreveport Louisiana and there is no one absolutely no one here that sells marine grade plywood. The closest dealer I could find was in Lafayette Louisiana, close to 200 miles away.

    Wooden stringers

Thanks for the reply guys. If using dimensional lumber in order to get my 12 foot lengths, I was going to have to put sister boards on each side of my dimensional lumber. But with using plywood I’m assuming it would be OK to put two pieces of three-quarter inch thick plywood together to get my...

    Wooden stringers

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is an older boat. 1975 model It has dimensional lumber for the stringers. There is a 2x4 12’ long board for the stringer in the center of the boat running long ways. Right in the keel. There are 2x2’s one on each side of the long 2x4 about 14” up the hull towards...

    Wooden stringers

I am getting ready to put new stringers in a little 16’ Eldocraft with a 40 horse Mercury on it. I had read where Douglas Fir was a good wood to use for stringers. I got some and as I was cutting it I noticed how soft it was between each growth ring. I’m just wondering if that’s pretty much the...

    Polyester resin cracked while curing

It had a very thin layer of chopper gun glass over the inside of the transom at the bottom. When I was grinding to clean it up to be able to tab in new stringers I went through glass and there was a void at bottom of transom wood and hull. I figured it would be better to fill the void in before...

    Polyester resin cracked while curing

It’s not in a structural spot or a spot that will cause a leak if it doesn’t hold. It is on the inside of the boat where the inside skin of the transom meets the floor. I was only gonna glass if so if water ever got in under the floor again it couldn’t get to the transom. There were holes left...

    Polyester resin cracked while curing

While working on my boat, I was using polyester resin with cabosil and I guess I mixed it too hot. I was only using it as a filler in some low spots and was going to fiberglass over it with 1708 later. On the spots where I used the filler, some of them cured with cracks in them. Is it going to...

Grinding on hull for floor replacement

While cutting out my floor in my fiberglass boat, I used a multi tool about a quarter inch out from the edge of the hull to cut old tie in where plywood floor connects to hull. It left an edge that is was wondering how much of that I needed to grind off. Does it need to be feather edged smooth...

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m about to go outside and fit one of my stringers. I hope you all have a good day and God bless.

How smooth should hull be when tabbing in stringers

It was never tabbed in per say. The stringers were just shot over with a chopper gun. At just half effort I might add.

I’ve only sanded a small spot. Wanted to make sure I was on the right track before proceeding.
