    Help this rookie Read Timing

1986. You guys hooked me up. I went back and tried to align the rust/stain marks. Worked and both 0 and .464 line up. Flywheel was both put on loose and wrong last time it went for maintenance. Now I wait for the new puller and holder and will do all the swaps. Will result in a completely new...

Just watched a video on a sheared woodruff key. Assuming when the flywheel is pulled the correct way, the woodruff key keeps things lined up. Just got my new stator but wires on top are exposed. Now delayed waiting for replacement. Bummer

Roger Dukedog. The flywheel holding tool looks like a few hundred bucks. But I found a few alternates on Amazon. I posted a link above to one of them. Not sure if it'll work as good as the merc part.

Welp, just noticed gonna have to use the puller to replace the trigger plate. Anyone have a link to a decently priced tools of decent quality? Don't think I want to spend 180 for the merc puller. Can't imagine what the hold tool costs. Thanks for everyone taking the time to respond.

Thanks racerone and not yet. Due to the age and scratches, I decided to order replacement stator, trigger plate, and rectifier along with both switch boxes. I'll rebuild once it all comes in. I don't think I'll be able to use the rust marks since the maintenance done that resulted in flywheel...

Dukedog, can you explain difference from pulling the way I did? Manual shows removing center bolt and using a puller. I removed outter bolts. The scratches on stator were causes by the bolts I removed having been left lose from before I had the motor.

Posting a few picts of the scratched up stator. Went ahead and ordered replacement as part of motor overhaul. Compression on all 6 cylinders 120. Can you explain to an idiot (me) how to find TDC with a dial indicator? The book has me find TDC and then rotate flywheel counterclockwise to 464...

Lol jimmbo. I took it out today for a run at the dock and discovered the missing bolt. Good thing I bought a few extras.

Water coming from spark plug hole inline 6 following overheat

Thanks racerone. I went slow and used combo of alcohol, WD40, plastic scrapers, and a sharp razer blade. Fingers crossed I got a good seal.

Water coming from spark plug hole inline 6 following overheat

About to start scrapping the 40-year old paper gasket off. Read to stay away from Scotch bright-type pads on grinders/dremmel for aluminum mating surfaces and to stick with acetone and a razer blade. Anyone know if the cooling jacket is made of aluminum...also any gasket removal tips and/or...

Yupper Chris1956. I'm restoring an 86 Fresh Only tower of power. Slow going but getting there. Roger copy Jimmbo. I think I'll be okay. It was only without water for a short time. Will let you know!

    Thoughts on aftermarket switchboxes...

Thanks Faztbullet. That's what I'll do. The Sierra's are $170 each, but I'm replacing old mismatch so will be worth the piece of mind.

    Thoughts on aftermarket switchboxes...

Any thoughts on aftermarket switch boxes to Merc 332-7778A12? Any success stories out there with products from Amazon? I'm leaning toward Sierra but they are about $170 each. Anyone been boating on a pair of the $50 dollar sets on Amazon...happily?

Water coming from spark plug hole inline 6 following overheat

Thanks for the advice. Got it off, and all bolts broke free no issue. Gasket will be ordered soon. I really thought I'd cracked something...glad it's just a gasket.

Water coming from spark plug hole inline 6 following overheat

Here is a picture. After additional researxh, i think it might just be the gasket. Not sure why it went bad in conjunction with the extra heat but that appears to be the case. Engine runs same and all cylinders are firing. Appreciate any comments from the gurus here.
