High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Thanks bullet… but I watched spark randomly dropping on at least two cylinders on opposing banks with a timing light while I was at the lake while it was messing up. All resistances always looked good when I checked them, but then I would fire it back up and it would be OK for just a bit...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

OK, so I just got my DVA in this afternoon, I ran the engine in a big tub to try to let it get as warm as possible, but of course it seemed to be idling/high idling well (can’t load it of course) and all of the measurements look good, the stator is putting out 285 V +-5V @ idle and it smoothly...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Thanks to both of you fellas!!! Throttle plates are definitely closed, I’m assuming equally, I’ve checked the timing and it’s dead on, that small diameter roller and air gap just stuck out to me. But yeah, I’m not fooling around with anything that doesn’t need it, I’ll let y’all know what I come...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

There’s a black roller on the post, it’s just not very large in diameter (only about 1/4”), and it’s held in place by a little O-ring on top, is there an outer piece of the roller missing, or is that all there should be? And should there be an air gap? Thanks much in advance!!

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Thanks for that info. oil isn’t cheap anymore either. I am still waiting on my DVA to arrive to nail down a component, and another interesting thing I’ve found is there is an air gap between my throttle roller and ramp, the roller looks small to me, it’s maybe 1/4” in outside diameter (about the...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Yeah, I hate to spend money needlessly either, especially nowadays, I’ve got a DVA coming with some probes to make it easier to test, thanks much for the guidance to the testing procedure, I’ll run it down and go from there. If the timer base isn’t bad, I almost hate to replace it with the...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Yep, I use an infrared thermometer for checking electrical connections at work, power companies use infrared cameras for finding bad connections in the power lines, I had never heard of or thought of the timing light trick until Racerone let me in on it. I normally run all of my two strokes at...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Hey thanks much Crosbyman!!! Let me ask you this, checking resistances, I found the stator right at the lower end of the scale, which is making me suspect it, If I can prove its bad with a dva test, while I’m in there would you replace the timing base as well, or are they not very prone to...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Already know it’s not fuel guys, observed spark dropping out randomly on either bank. Racerone, I agree a lot of electronic parts probably are replaced on a hunch, I don’t have a DVA meter, so all I can really check is resistance with the engine off, (I don’t even know how one would go about...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

It was Racerone that gave me the idea of using a timing light, (pretty smart I thought!!!) although I think on a different forum. I was thinking the internal resistance of the stator is low on the scale at 400-450 Ohms, one spec I found says 450-700 and another says about 1,000 Ohms, so that’s...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Installing a new pulse pump wouldn’t have any bearing on dropping spark though right? I witnessed it Saturday, intermittently dropping spark on cylinder 2 and 3 with a timing light.

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

I verified it wasn’t overheating then unhooked the tan temperature sensor wires along with the kill wire, that should keep it from going into slow mode, right?

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Well, a little update after testing this weekend, it’s not cavitation, skeg straightened and transducer removed, still has intermittent high RPM surge and now it will intermittently fall on its face on plane out of nowhere, good fuel and all. I know it’s an ignition problem now, I observed spark...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Thanks tphoyt!! I’m not guessing/making assumptions, rather trying to figure out what tests to perform next, thanks for the flashlight idea, that’s a pretty good one, I haven’t been able to run it without the cover yet due to the rooster tail that’s flying up from the misplaced transducer. I’ll...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Yeah, it’s a long story about the VRO pump, long story short it was off of it when I got it, so I’ve kind of got what I’ve got, I couldn’t really see buying one just for fuel pumping, so I went this route, I’ll get a little 5 gal tank with maybe a smaller lower pressure fuel pump for the next...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Hey that’s a good idea tphoyt, thanks much!! Flying Scott, my wife pumped the bulb while I was driving, she said it was pretty firm, I told her to press it harder just for kicks, and it bogged down, I suppose it unseated the needle valves, it’s a low pressure pump for carbs ( 9PSI, .5 GPM) I...

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Hi everybody, I have a newly acquired 19’ Sunbird fish and ski that’s got a 1998 130HP Evinrude V4 two stroker on the back which I believe has low hours. I deleted the VRO (it was over-oling and reason for previous owners putting it up), new low pressure electric fuel pump, fuel hoses, choke...
