    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

Welp I figured it out! Where the solenoid grounds is bad. Just have to run a ground wire to the main ground/exhaust manifold. Once I did that the solenoid clicked. Starter didn’t crank but I have a spare. Thanks again, everyone!

I’m close to a Clark Griswold moment on this one. I’m sure the existing ground for the solenoid is fine. No need for my extra one. Thank you, everyone, for your help so far! I know it’s something so simple and I’ll be mad when I find it. I’m gonna let it marinate for a while.

I found the wonky: the harness holder was grounding against the negative. Makes sense because it would only random start with the cover on. I’m not getting continuity between the battery positive into solenoid and the main negative connection; but, good continuity between the solenoid into...

I’ll try that. I have a new ignition on the way, too.

    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

The funniest thing happened: I went to connect the battery to test some more, and it started cranking when I put the negative cable on the battery. The key was in my pocket. So, cables and solenoid all work. Ignition needs to be sorted. Right?

I did the ignition wire to I and ground to S. I threw that extra ground on there and still nothing. So weird!

    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

Threw the new solenoid on and …nothing. Tried jumping the positive to I post and nothing. I’m pretty stumped. The ground checks out, and everything else is grounded. I’m going to take some extra wire and mount it with the solenoid ground and use a fresh battery cable. Makes no sense I can’t jump...

Thanks for this! I had it wired up that way at the start, though. I only switched based on a wiring diagram I found here and second guessed myself. I was still having the same issues, though. New solenoid gets here tomorrow. Fingers crossed! Will report back. Also, noted on the ground wire...

That was step three haha. My push choke works so the fuse is working. Without the fuse, the choke doesn’t work. I have another, better quality solenoid arriving tomorrow.

When I got the boat the ground was there. I’m hesitant to try it with the ground disconnected. I can retry the new one.

Nothing. I used a big wire this time. Tried with ignition on and off.

Yes, I tested that specifically with my multimeter and it beeped.

Absolutely nothing happened. I can reinstall the new one where I cracked the hosing a little. Maybe that’ll do something.

    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

It should! It’s why I’m so stumped. I’ve attached some pics of everything all wired up. I used brand new battery cables and nothing. No clicks from solenoid. I am genuinely puzzled. The solenoid has the ignition wire on the “S” and the ground on the “I.” Ground wire checks out with a nice buzz...

I tested each grounding point and everything is ringing out as it should. Post from battery to ground, starter posts to ground, solenoid to ground.

The new (and correct!) starter gets here tomorrow. Plus new battery cables. I forgot to note the solenoid does not click. I don’t mind having a helper turn the key. It makes them feel like they’re a part of it.

Solenoid doesn’t click, either. Something doesn’t add up.
