How to add fluid to a 150 Yamaha hydraulic steering?

My neighbor has a Yammie 150 and hydraulic steering. Fluid is added to the helm, via a cap in the fiberglass dashboard, left of the steering wheel. Unscrew the cap, screw in the hydraulic fluid hose (like a gear lube pump hose), and then connect the hose to a qt of hydraulic fluid. It helps...

Cable type for F70 with Mercury controller.

On some cables, the plastic ends come off. Look for a square head screw near the end of the fitting. Maybe you can reuse your Yammie ends?

Won't shift into reverse or neutral

A high RPM at idle will prevent the motor from coming out of gear as well. She should idle at 900RPM or less. Mercs usually have an idle stop setting on the throttle arm. When in neutral, the throttle should be pushed up against the throttle stop. You might check that and adjust the throttle...

    Mercruiser 305 V-8 Temp issues

MerCruiser impellers will cause overheat at idle, if the bottom of them is damaged. You state that you replace it every year, so I will assume that is not the issue. Do you replace the wear plate, and the two gaskets as well? If the wearplate has scratches or the gaskets leak, that can cause...

    Mercruiser 305 V-8 Temp issues

What do the top of the risers, under the rubber sleeve look like? That is usually an indicator of how much the manifolds and risers are corroded. Picture 2 shows a lot more rust that I thought I would see, especially on a freshwater boat. Was she used in the salt, before you bought it? She...

1984 Mercruiser 3.0 starter wiring help

This should be reposted in the MerCruiser forum. You might look for a wiring diagram for your motor. They should be available on the net. Although the starter wiring probably didn't change much or at all over the years, it would be best to get a diagram for the 3.0 as close to your year as...

Throttle Control Replacement - Caravelle 209

Controls are not hard to put in. If you have ever changed a throttle or shift cable, you have already done it, or most of it. Different engines use different spots within the control to attach the cables, so do not lose the instructions. Both controls you cited should work. Make sure the...

    Poor fibreglass adhesion to plywood

Gee, mix in a bit less hardener and let the resin soak into the plywood for longer. I replaced my transom on a nice warm day and mixed maybe 3/4 of the hardener usually called for. It took hours to harden, but it soaked into the plywood very well.

    Issues with a 2003 225 EFI power head that replaced a 2001 225 Optimax.

That begs the question....is the computer wiring the same between EFI and Optimax? In not, it may never work right. If the wiring is the same, update of the sw should be able to fix it, one would think. Although I do not know it to be a fact, manufacturers usually allow for SW updates, as...

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, our Canadian friend was not the only one complaining about the gear oil prices. BTW Amazon has Valvoline marine gear oil for $10.21/qt. Not bad if you can get free shipping.

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, a check of wallyworld shows the super tech gear oil less than $7/qt, and Quicksilver in the $25/gt range. That trend seems to hold for 2 cycle oil as well, although the Pennzoil brand is nearly as cheap as the super tech.

Service Manual 1984 90 HP Mercury

A Mercury service manual is best. I do not have a link to one, for that old of a motor. See if you can buy one on fleabay. I would expect that motor to be a six cylinder inline motor, with 3 carbs and six coils. The inline six motors up until 1979 1/2 had distributor ignitions and a single...

    1959 Evinrude Lark Kill Switch

So Jim, "The only possible way to shut it off is to retard the throttle or pull the fuel line. " from your post #8 actually means that it can be done electrically? Glad that is cleared up.

    Long shaft motors

Lower HP motors generally get put on smaller boats. Smaller boats usually have a shorter transom height. Some smaller motors are used as sailboat aux power. These often have long shafts, so they can reach the water easier. Does that get it?
