This will make you feel better about your boat- took me 30 years from when I bought it as a non running/ non driver project to get it road worthy..

Can a old mercruiser motor run very well with following pressures?

Get it up to temp and it will be higher. Given age of engine it likely sat so may need to free up some rings and valves once it gets going. May want to soak cylinders with marvel mystery oil and use merc pwoer tune or other top engine cleaner to get carbon out once it is running. Bottom line...

    Ford 302 pinging

Certainly understandable, you want to get it to the point where you mostly turn it on and use it vs working on it. Personally would hold off and get a 4 bbl as the rochester if jetted correctly should work fine. Unless there is something wrong with it you wont see any gain Just getting a new 2...

Can a old mercruiser motor run very well with following pressures?

125 is a bit low but would expect it to run ok. might need valve work or rocker adjustment on the cylinder that is low whats the history on it

    Priming a Rebuild Engine

Sounds like you were able to index the drive shaft back in the oil pump, if so i would drop the distributor in there remove spark plugs bump it on starter to ensure oil is moving up to rockers and building pressure. If so then you should be good to go.

@Jakem- before you put a new carb on did you resolve the fuel contamination issue ? You dont want to pollute a new carb with debris Would also recommend a 4 bbl if you are going to upgrade, I saw much better mid range throttle response when I went from Mercarb to Edlebrock

Mercruiser 5.7L Major Oil Leak Underneath

Do you have blow by on engine that may induce leaking from crank seals under load and not show when idling on the ground? First thought is rear main seal or core plug in back of block where cam goes Where was the oil on the engine when it was removed?

4.3 dying when putting it in gear

Disconnect the interrupt switch and put it in gear. If it is the switch it wont stall out, if it does look for other carb or ignition issues.

    Volvo Penta BB260 Ignition Coil

If resistors were bypassed would think boat originally had points and was converted to electronic . As with other comments post a pic of what ignition system you have as it would be odd for someone to refit a Merc Tbolt to a volvo. Wondering if it is a Delco EST and OP is mixing up nomenclature?

4.3 dying when putting it in gear

Watch the shift plate when you shift see if it is tripping the interrupt switch. if it is take the lower shift cable off shift plate yiu should be able to shift it easily. If not pull the drive and see what is hanging it up. would find it odd to be the cable since it was just replaced, but that...

    Priming a Rebuild Engine

I would get a scope camera and look if the retainer sleeve is still on the oil pump if it is you can probably get the drive shaft back in with some finagling and cursing … if it fell off into the pan you have to pull the motor.

It is big enough for your application. A 5.0 engine up to 5 k rpm doesnt need much.

    3.8 OMC replacement motors?

Gm marine engines are essentially truck engines. Typical differences between auto and marine are camshafts, head gaskets, core plugs. the real differences are in electrical, ignition and fuel systems those are very different if you really like the boat and its in decent shape get a complete...

    Dean's List gets another motor

To me that is the right way of doing it, there can be no question down the road what it was machined to And the customer is accepting these measurements/tolerances. He probably learned it the hard way early on. Unfortunately getting harder to find guys like this anymore…
