    Unless there is some other itty bitty detail that you haven't mentioned... it sounds like like the Linkage between the Connector, and the Shift Shaft got reassembled wrong.

    1.62:1 will work with a 5 liter, but something in the 1.5:1range is better for a 5.7, unless you are in the 23 ft range. At that length, a Big Block should be under consideration

    I am not a fan of the 4.3 as it is a small engine, and a V6 to boot. I find it to be low on Torque, and an Albatross on boats over 16 ft It's main Achilles' Heel is that the Intake manifold, needs to be drained when Winterizing. This is a Procedure that is quite often missed the first time...

    If it just the Insulation that is cracking and splitting, a can of Liquid Neoprene, can be used to reinsulate the Wire(s). If the copper itself has sheared, then a splice might repair it, but sometimes you just have to replace the Unit in its entirety

    A 6 volt system would have Battery Cables that almost look like they belong on a Bulldozer, while the ones on a 12 volt system are smaller

    Reeds had some differences too. This is one case/example where the are no differences in the Block/Ports, but that doesn't mean the Port Timing is the same between the engines

    While it can be spun that fast without flying apart too soon, older engines may have used different Cam Grinds and 4800-5000 might be out of their intended Rpm range, as well if the Intake and Heads are restrictive, there is nothing to gain by over revving it past the 4600 mark.
