Four Winns 2000 Horizon new Owner

Model year 2000, that's really getting pretty old, and will need a fair amount of work done even if the fiberglass/composite and interior are still in good shape. Problem areas are as noted, the fuel pumps were much less reliable than the older mechanical style which I still have. The other...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PLKD timing mark out of scale

What ignition system is on it now? You might already have it lol. Any ignition system you use has to be marine certified, and no marine distributor that I have ever seen used vacuum advance, that's for an auto set up only. So yeah someone took a mid 80s pre Vortec pre one piece main seal engine...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi PLKD timing mark out of scale

Interesting someone replaced a late model (96+) Vortec/roller cam with a 1st gen small block with flat tappet cam and painted it the correct Volvo red…. To determine if it has pre Vortec heads vs Vortec heads..check the # of bolts holding down the intake manifold; 12= Pre Vortec; 8= Vortec. It...

Alpha1 350 raw cooled boils and ticks rapidly after short time on muffs

The thing with these warm manifold systems which looks like what you have; the elbows should be fed by a constant supply of cool water but the manifolds don’t get water flow till the thermostat opens. This is to prevent condensation in the manifolds by keeping the manifolds hotter than 120*F...

Alpha1 350 raw cooled boils and ticks rapidly after short time on muffs

Don’t run it in a drum you need pressurized water from the hose to get the impeller to prime. I would: 1) get the better quality round Mercruiser muffs with the metal rod clamp these use softer rubber that better conforms to the lower unit. I have found that cheaper aftermarket ones use stiff...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

My brother just bought a new Venture aluminum bunk trailer; he was lucky to find one in stock. Nice trailer! Mines a ‘94 Load Rite that I’ve upgraded a few times over the years. My boat sits on a mooring during the season so the trailer doesn’t go in the salt water often; maybe 4 times a year.

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

Probably a good plan to go over your brake system & make sure your brakes release properly before leaving on a long tow, check the bearings for water intrusion, set your preload, if all that is looked over there isn't much that can go wrong, as long as you're not riding on tires that are too...

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

looks like in '95 OMC/Volvo's 5.0 was a Ford....lol....I know they used both GM and Ford engines....I use the old OMC catalog because without the arcane Volvo model number their parts catalog is indeciperable, and between '94 and '98 OMCs and Volvos were the same, same parts #s, painted same...

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

I think if the cam gear was wearing you'd have heard some odd noises, you had an overheat, and then a no start, so when you crank it are the spark plugs getting voltage? Just use a simple spark tester and check. If not then you get to the next step. One thing, OMC & Volvo used a Prestolite BID...

    Will carport help mold/mildew issues?

You probably need more ventilation under the covers and moisture absorbers

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

What you could do is pack the inner bearing put it in the hub/drum then install the seal. Then pack the outer bearing and put it in the hub/drum. Next tape plastic bags over the inner and outer openings of the hub to keep out dirt and keep the outer bearing from falling out. This way if you have...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

If you’ve got 4 wheel brakes you can just buy one more 12” drum and a set of bearings. Remember you have to figure out if you have 5200 or 6000 hub drums. The inner bearings are the same for the two but the 6000 hub has a larger outer bearing

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

You’ve got to do more trouble shooting to find out why it doesn’t start. Check for Spark first then check the fuel system

    Manifold/riser kit

here's what can happen if you leave them on too long in salt water, these would not have leaked at the water passage but the elbow exit itself rusted through. Not mine a pic I found on the 'net, prob in a heavy salt region. When I had mine off I hooked them up to the water hose to watch for any...

1970 River Queen Houseboat new owner here!

Looks like a fun party hangout. I’d be curious to see what the old Chrysler looks like. Probably a 318 cu in or 383 cu in. Those were very good engines some of Mopar’s best in fact but they have not been made in marinized form for many years. However some parts are still available like exhaust...

    Manifold/riser kit

Are you in a freshwater region or salt? If fresh you may do fine with the aftermarket wet joint units that come in the Barr kit and the parts price is about half what the Merc OEM dry joint goes for. In fresh you don’t get near the corrosion we see in salt water regions. If in salt then yes the...

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

PPS Yes do as Scott advised; other things that can get damaged by an overheat are the water tube gaskets in the outdrive. Hot exhaust without cooling water will melt these partially which can cause overheats due to low raw water volume

Overheat on 5.0 with SX outdrive

PS I had a bad overheat back in 2013 and while the engine ran fine for the rest of that season & 2 more seasons it blew both head gaskets at the end of the ‘16 season. Had water in the oil and in a cylinder. In the tear down I found that both cyl heads had cracks in the exhaust valve seat...
