I have a 1960 Merc 400. I just discovered a crack in the drive shaft housing where the lower unit bolts to it. Can this casting be welded or is it junk?

Can someone recommend a new steering system for a 1960 Merc 400e? I recently bought a teleflex rotary system but the end of the cable was too big to fit through the tilt tube. The tube is only 7/16" ID.
