    1984 35hp mercury steering part

Along those same lines, sometimes the steering cable allows the motor to turn more in one direction. An adjustable length steering arm can fix that.

    Silicone question

Where fiberglass hulls meet their caps, silicone is often applied to seal the seam. This is usually covered by a rub rail. Not sure is aluminum boats get this treatment.

    Blown fuse

The fuse on a lot of motors runs starter solenoid, power trim and gauges. Look for a shorted purple wire, a melted purple wire or one with the insulation rubbed off. Check areas on the engine and boat where the wire runs thru the cowling. The control can also wear down the insulation, as...

Tach non working on Mercury classic 50

That is a full wave rectifier. Move the tach wire to the other yellow wire terminal. If the tach works, replace the rectifier, as at least one diode is open.

1988 mariner 75 one cylinder not working

Did you even look at the spark plugs? They can tell you a lot more than spraying ether into a carb. If you do use ether, have a fire extinguisher at your fingertips. If the motor catches fire and you use the extinguisher, the powder is real corrosive, and can get sucked into the cylinders...

Tach non working on Mercury classic 50

John, What is the model number of the motor? How many wires on the rectifier? A full wave rectifier has 3 wires (red, yellow, yellow), plus the rectifier body is grounded. A half wave rectifier will have 2 wires, (red, yellow)

Tach non working on Mercury classic 50

Jimmbo, My Mercury's from the 70s all had full wave bridge rectifiers, when did they change to half wave rectifiers?

    Prop talk?

Gee, why not get the SS prop fixed? Most prop shops will rehub them.

1988 mariner 75 one cylinder not working

Inspect the spark plugs. If one is real clean, you may be getting water in that cylinder. Also, which cylinder drives the fuel pump? If the fuel pump diaphragm leaks, raw fuel can foul the cylinder. If you have spark, the coil pack is good, no?

Tach non working on Mercury classic 50

Most Mercury rectifiers are bridge rectifiers. That is one diode can be bad and the system will still charge the battery at half current. A bad diode can also not provide the tach signal. You might connect the tach wire to the other AC terminal of the rectifier and see if it then works.

    Regular fuel

Almost all engines are rated for regular fuel. Fuel sitting for 2 weeks is not an issue with any grade of gasoline.

    portable jump starter.

You mean a jump pack? I never believed in them. They are simply a newer battery than you have now. What happens when you replace the battery in the boat? Do you replace the jump pack, or let it get old? Batteries wear out even if not used. I consider a jump pack as a back up to your old...

    11 wires?

Sounds like a "custom" wiring job. You may be able to pair like colored wires, but who knows what the installer did. Even if you used two complete harnesses, that would only be 10 wires. It would be best to trace each wire. For 11 wires, I expect some to be unused, since you would only need...

    1995 Mercury 115hp. Wot bog

It may be a fuel restriction. See if pumping the primer at WOT fixes it. If so, look for air leaks in the fuel line, dirty filters, clogged antisiphon valves or a clogged fuel tank vent. That motor should have a 5/16" fuel line. Smaller will starve it.

    1968 Glastron Transom question

You can apply fiberglass cloth and resin directly to the wood, and make the repair. I am surprised that the wood is in good shape, but if it is, definitely make the repair before it gets wet. Grind the edges of the remaining fiberglass to feather them. Cut the first piece of new cloth to...

    Mercury Switch

Boscoe, Mercury OBs from the 70s had a battery driven CDI system, utilizing a Hall-effect trigger. This system pulsed the single coil with high voltage from the capacitor, to induce spark, and had a mechanical distributor. It was different than the battery/coil/points system you describe...

    Stringer replacement

3/4 CSM is a bit light. I like the 1.5oz mat for structural stuff. Use 2-4 layers of 3/4 CSM for strength on stringers. 3/4 CSM is good for waterproofing the decking.
