    1985 Mercury 50HP 2-Stroke 4-Cylinder

Couldn't get a replacement bowl for the 32 year old float bowl. Running out of time so I decided to just go with JB Weld on the outside of the bowl only on the scratches and scrapes. I didn't feel comfortable with putting anything inside the bowl where it could potentially come off and clog...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Worked on the stern too. Used the drill brush and Goo Gone and did make some progress cleaning off the gunky stuff. But we still have a ways to go. Other folks have run into the same difficulties as I recall. Oh yeah, we also tried the dryer fabric softener sheets with some Dawn...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

T minus 22 days and counting. Carburetor decision made. Couldn't obtain a replacement bowl. Went with JB Weld WaterWeld on the outside of the float bowl only. The putty type. I just didn't feel comfortable with having something on the inside of the bowl. The corrosion on the inside is...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Ah, I do have some Permatex gasket maker. I even know where it is! Got the transom back out of the boat this evening. Easy peasy. Started testing what works best on the gunk on the stern. Tried Goof Off and it was not very effective. Next was Goo Gone and that was definitely better...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

T minus 23 days and counting. Made some good progress today. Sort of. And we're not done yet. Will be going back out there this evening. My mechanic buddy came over this morning to help me with the shifter controls. I explained that I wanted to take 2 broken shifter controls and swap parts to...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I took this pic before I finished cleaning the carb. Is that red goop Loctite of some kind? It sort of flakes off when scraped. Acts more like a sealant than a thread locker. Should I replace it where it's missing? Or maybe use real Loctite?

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Home again. And glad for it! :) Here's the donor motor I'm hoping to check out. It's a 40HP not a 50, but that carb float bowl sure looks like mine! Seller says he has other parts as well.

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

One carb thoroughly cleaned, reassembled and ready to remount! :) Reassembly started. So I was working along, following the manual and it says there are two types of floats; a black one and a white one. The black one is adjustable but the white one is not, it can only be replaced...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Trolling motor has been dismounted. The sun came out and it got hot outside so we're indoors again. Will go back this evening and assemble one carb for sure. May have an option for the problematic float bowl. Maybe. So I'll wait until that's resolved before assembling the second carb...

    Deck for 1975 16 SS

For my 16' Kingfisher, I measured and calculated that 3 sheets of plywood "should" be enough. Bought the wood and will be installing the new deck soon. Here's how I did the flotation foam in mine a couple years ago.

T minus 25 days and counting. Lunch break! :pizza: The boy is in the process of pulling the trolling motor off. He got it unbolted okay and now needs me to remove the electrical wiring. I'll be shortening the shaft so that it suits the KF better. That's the "official" position I'll take...

    1985 Mercury 50HP 2-Stroke 4-Cylinder

I mentioned a problem with a carb float bowl. Here's what's going on. When I removed the bowl, in addition to the crud and varnish, there is a corrosion pit inside the bowl which also appears to be on the outside of the bowl as well. It's visible through the gunk, as are scratches from some...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

T minus 26 days and counting. Today I made a parts run to get carb stuff. Twice. Because I forgot to add something to the list. But I got all the carb gaskets and a pair of new floats. When I took the second carb apart, the float was partially filled with fuel, so I decided to...

    1985 Mercury 50HP 2-Stroke 4-Cylinder

Time for me to holler for help! Hi all, I’m installing a used Merc 50 onto my Starcraft Kingfisher. The KF thread is located here. I have some experience with car engines but not really much with outboards so this is a learning experience for me. Here are some pix of the engine in...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Got as far as I can with the carbs. Need to get parts before reassembling. Moving on to other stuff... I can't recall if I showed the throttle control for the 50 Merc from the nasty glasser donor, but it's in bad shape. How about that hinge? Creative, right? The good...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

T minus 27 days and counting. I worked on the second carb today. Got it cleaned up just fine. It wasn't in nearly as bad a condition as the other carb. It didn't have any of that sticky black tar stuck everywhere like the other carb had. I also got the lower unit filled with gear oil. Made...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I think I may need a new float bowl because the inside corrosion lines up perfectly with this corrosion spot on the outside of the bowl. I'm a bit concerned that it's going to leak at some point. This is what the inside pit looks like up close. So I did the only reasonable thing for...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

After removing the float bowl I got to see lots of filthy, gummy gunk! Underneath all that gunk in the float bowl was a major corrosion pit! The corrosion looks like it's coming through to the other side. And it's clear that some PO was in there with a sharp something or other and...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

T minus 28 days and counting. Capped off the speedo pitot this morning. Glued, screwed and zip tied. The LU is almost ready to reinstall on the engine. I still need to fill it with gear oil. Went to Wally World this afternoon for grocery shopping and picked up a quart of Quicksilver 80-90...
