1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Great work! while you got the engine out, if there is any question about the condition of the power steering actuator, replace it! They are a bear to get at when the engine is in place. I had to remove the rear seats and both exhaust manifolds to do that job.

    2015 Motor MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp NO EC - OVERHEATING!

Again I'm not familiar with these newer Merc engines and the cooling system is a lot more complex than the older models. However, on the old models the way you would test for leaky head gasket putting combustion gas into the cooling water, was to replace the hoses feeding the exhaust manifolds...

    2015 Motor MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp NO EC - OVERHEATING!

Ok it’s hard to say but from the pix I’m wondering if the water passages in the exhaust manifolds & elbows are clogged. They don’t look corroded but I’d hook up a garden hose to them & see if they flow well & flow the same each side. Those temps seem really high seeing as how the engine is at...

    Oil Analysis Poor Sample

What you can do is take another sample toward the end of your season. To check the intake you don’t need to pull it; you can drain the water out of the block & remove the thermostat housing. Poke around in the area right under the stat and see if the cast iron there is solid or not. A rottted...

    Are cheap carburetors good?

Anything that cheap that is “new” is knockoff junk. I might try one on a lawnmower if no OE was available but on a boat or vehicle never. A real new carb is in the range of $550 for a 2 bbl on up. It is definitely worth properly cleaning & rebuilding your OEM carb as long as the inside isn’t...

    5.0 MPI Fuel grade.

My fuel dock only sells 93 octane but I have also run mine on 89 octane from the gas station. On the flame arrestor on this engine I think it says 89. I don’t think you can go wrong upping the octane a bit due to carbon build up increasing the octane needs of the engine. Marine engines are very...

    Disc Brake Identification

I’ve been doing that for years here in the salt pond. The best greases I’ve used are Evinrude triple guard & Lucas Marine grease (blue).

2016 Mercruiser 6.2L ECT DTS Axius Cooling System Issue

I wonder if you could back flush your raw water intake line from the impellers back with the outdrives off to really clean it out. I had such a problem with barnacles growing on that water intake screen in the lower unit I removed it about 10 years ago. After that I could easily rod out the 4...

2016 Mercruiser 6.2L ECT DTS Axius Cooling System Issue

One thing I wished they would have incorporated into outdrives is removable water intake screens; in my experience with salt water boating most restrictions are in the water intake area. I never found anything past there with pulling the outdrive every season. Some outboards have these but I/Os...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GI-F (2006) water in Cylinders

When I installed mine (Barr gaskets) I used Permatex Aviation as recommended by the Barr tech guy & no leaks after 4 seasons of use….

Water in Oil (Again) Head Scratcher

I think I've seen less than .003" listed in Volvo's instructions, not sure what Merc says. My Barr set were less than that, barely .001"

    My boat is being a boat . . .

I’m going to take before & after pic of our boat ramp when they replace it. I’m hoping that with all the new material they make it with more of a slope to make launching easier. We have a big sand bar that protects the inner harbor where all the boats are moored. With a 200 lb mooring & good...

Volvo Penta 5.7 GI-F (2006) water in Cylinders

I recall it being mentioned on here that Barr Marine casts the parts for VP, no reason to pay extra for VP IMO. I installed my in ‘17 they are still holding up well & will prob replace the elbows this fall.

Merc 4.3 mechanical fuel pump oil leak

I put in a Sierra about 5 years ago no leaks and works fine. Think is was S Korea made. I also have a spare Carter that is USA made. When I installed it I used either Permatex or OMC gasket sealer.

    Water in oil

Volvo Penta recommended syn 10/40 in the same GM marine engines that Merc used so I’d think it should be fine

Need to check shutters… any tips?

That or silicone spray, I have checked mine without having to remove the elbows as well. Kinda depends on how long they've been on there. Here in the salt pond they get taken off every 5 years…
