1988 Mercury outboard won’t trim up or down

Some of those replacement PTT motors have an adaptor that allows the motor shaft to drive the pump. If that is not installed, the motor just spins. The motor should not stick into it's mounts. You likely need to remove it and see if it truly drives the pump. I normally needed to remove the...

    Fuel leak/ affecting plug?

It is very difficult to understand your question, at least for me. It seems obvious that fuel from the tank leaked into the bilge of the boat. The source of the leak must be found and fixed. Replacement gaskets for the gauge senders are available. You may also need to buy or make a gasket...

    Key switch / Ignition issue

If you have the slave solenoid, you can jumper it and see if the starter turns. You will want to find the battery power on the secondary winding, and connect that to the primary post that would receive power from the ignition switch. Jumpering across the slave solenoid secondary winding proves...

    Question: Sealing underneath sub-floors

All wells must have a drain to let water out. My boat has the keel of the hull open, acting as a gutter to drain water from the front fishbox to the bilge. A lot of fiberglass hulls do not actually have keels, but rely on the shape of the hull to provide the necessary strength. That...

    Key switch / Ignition issue

I faulty neutral interlock switch could cause your issue. However, some MerCruisers have a slave solenoid that is activated by the ign switch. This solenoid then activates the starter solenoid. If the slave solenoid is bad, the starter solenoid will not activate under influence of the...

    Coil spark strength

Spark looks OK. Do you get spark out of distributor, thru sparkplug wires, at the right time? Did you remove the distributor, when servicing the carbs? Spark plug wires, dist cap and rotor are normal maintenance items on Sterndrives.

1988 Mercury 50HP - mercury tilt kill switch

You may find that some of the wires in the MerControl are in need of rehab. Alternatively, your ign key switch could be bad. This summer I finally had to rewire my '77 MerControl. Not a bad job, provided you have a heavy duty soldering iron and lots of flux. The Keyswitch is still the...

    Which Motor To Use

The only meaningful difference is that the 140 likely has Back-Drag carbs. I never had an issue with them, but some think "thems the devil hisself", and disable them. They may give you some economy over the 135 HP motor. There are also some block port changes. The 140HP motor has the newer...

    Mercury Remote Control Assembly

Mark, He is talking about a MerCruiser Sterndrive. Evens, Check the shift cable boot. When they leak, the lower shift cable can corrode, limiting its ability to retract. This can affect reverse.

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

The surging you describe sounds like a fuel delivery issue. You could try pumping the primer bulb at high speed and see if it collapses or if the motor runs better. That will cinch it as a fuel delivery problem. if the primer bulb collapses, the fuel tank vent is likely the culprit.

    Marine Growth Took Over.-

Gee, I spend 2 hours bottom painting my boat, and get to have it tied to my dock in summer. That beats summer trailer storage everytime....

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

The vapor separator cover must seal to it's body. A new gasket may be in order. Air leaks there are the same as air leaks anywhere in the fuel line.

ngk buhw-2 vs buhw spark plugs for 90hp merc?

If you put a straight edge across the end of the spark plug, it appeared the center electrode protruded a bit more, out of the spark plug. It was a while ago, and my memory may be wrong, however, I do not think your theory of higher voltage and heavier sparkplug wire insulation is correct.

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

One more thing, the fuel mixture adjustment screw on the carbs only affects idle mixture. At RPMs above 1200 or so, it has no effect.

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

That sounds like a fuel delivery problem. You might check the vapor pump. The vapor pump in conjunction with the OMS pump are responsible for supplying the carbs with enough fuel to run at any speed. In addition check all fuel line connections, the antisiphon valve at the fuel tank and the...

ngk buhw-2 vs buhw spark plugs for 90hp merc?

Not sure that gap information is correct. My '77 Merc 1500 called for BUHW, where my '73 Merc 850 called for BUHW-2. They both had the same battery driven CDI ignition system. The BUHW-2 always looked to have a slightly longer electrode projection, but that is just a guess.
