    Broken Skeg Tip...Repairable?

Mercury used to make replacement skegs that could be welded on. You need to hire a good welder, who knows how to weld it w/o melting the seals, else you need to strip out the gears and seals. In your particular case, a skeg guard or some JB weld to smooth out the jagged stuff likely works.

    BOAT PUNK

There are a lot of symptoms that are well known to have specific causes. A gross example is a 70's inline Merc with water in the bottom cylinder. It is likely caused by bad crankshaft seals or a leaking exhaust component, either inner cover or baffle. It could in theory, be other things...

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

I cannot answer your question, however, the older Mercs like your 850 had the gearcase with the rounded skeg (your bottom picture). The sharp skeg didn't come out until the 90's. I do not expect many here on the forum to know your answer, unfortunately. Rebuilding a gearcase is not a common...

    BOAT PUNK

Ken, There are a lot of inexperienced posters and lurkers. It is important to help them with clear, precise and correct advice. Giving them advice that is not known by you to correct and proper or recommending products that are contrary to OEM guidelines is not what they need. The forum's...

    Merc 650 ignition system swap

First of all Merc didn't make a 650 in 1990. Those old model numbers were out in about 1980 or so. You might check the places the distributorless stator and trigger bolt on areas. I doubt the distributor motor has those. If the pistons, rods and crank are the same, you could swap 'em over...

    Gas line fitting

Why do you not want to use the correct fitting? You want to cut part of the motor away instead? If you get an air leak into the fuel line, you can have running trouble. Can you reuse the old fitting?

    Battery upgrade on Kayak

10Ga wire is rated for 30amps. Is 360W enough for your trolling motor?

Renovating the deck floor top layer

There are non slip products like fine sand that may be added to gel or paint. I would think the first choice is to save the diamond pattern, if you can. If the diamond pattern is beyond saving, you could use the sand additive, or go with carpet or vinyl flooring.

Water pressure gauge or water temperature gauge?

Yamahas usually have a separate water jacket cover on the head. If you pull that, you can see if there is corrosion on the cylinder head itself. I am unsure what you meant when you said the pinholes in the water jacket were soldered. Usually, they leak water internally before they leak...

    New at this need help

It sounds like you have the new wiring colors. Red is battery power and goes to the "B" terminal. Black is ground and goes to one of the "M" terminals. Purple is ign power and goes to the "I" terminal. Black/yellow is usually the color of the ign killer wire and goes to the other "M"...

Merc won't shift regardless of position of the control handle

That is the issue when installing the gearcase in forward. If the lower shift shaft is not turned all the way CCW, while in forward, the control often does not have enough travel to turn it to neutral. It is best to install the gearcase in neutral. The control also must be in neutral.

    Coil Testing.

The primary coil (thin wire) should not have very much resistance. Almost a short. The secondary will have 2K times that resistance.

    ‘77 Mercury 1150 Compression

Any tester will work on cylinders 1-5. I was able to unscrew the rubber tip and install a brass elbow, and then the rubber tip, to get #6. Alternatively, remove the four bolts holding the lower cowl to the cowling support and push the lower cowling down.

Water pressure gauge or water temperature gauge?

Possibly a pressure gauge can show high pressure in the cooling water system, from a compression leak. Aluminum in salt water tends to develop ruts and pinholes, over its entire surface. Maybe the original issue has returned in another part of the head? I have never heard of soldering an...

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

Carbs should be set to 1-1/2 turn open, and adjusted in the water, from there. Do not exceed the max spark advance of 21*BTDC. After you get her to run, if she still doesn't run well, check the spark plugs for their color. Brown/black are good, but clean is not good. A clean spark plug...

how do i test tilt and trim motor on a volvo penta 4.3 gl sx with blue and green wires and no black earth thanks

I do not have V-P experience, but 2 wire PTT motors get +12VDC on the blue wire and ground on the green wire, to trim up. 2 wire PTT motors get ground on the blue wire and +12VDC on the green wire to trim down. Two PTT relays provide for the switching of polarity on the motor.

Water pressure gauge or water temperature gauge?

What year is the Yamaha? Some Yamaha's had a tendency for the heads to rot out and leak compression into the cooling system, and vice versa. Did you replace the thermostat? Can you run at 5000RPM for short periods, or is 4100RPM the max you can get? A water pressure gauge may help diagnose...

Just bought new boat, trouble first time out. Please help.

To amplify Racer's point, my '59 Fat Fifty had points/magneto ignition and ran on a 24::1 mixture. In those days, we also ran last year's fuel in the spring, without any stabilizer (not invented) and I am sure the ratio was much lower due to evaporation of the gasoline all winter. It made more...

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

Sure, Idle RPM should be 600-650 in gear, and 800-900 in neutral. Those motors sacrifice idle quality for quick smooth acceleration, so find an idle RPM you can live with as long as she accelerates smooth. You cannot have both, due to the design of the carbs. Fresh 50::1 fuel helps idle...
