    Volvo Steering Fluid vs ATF

Got my steering arm/actuator removed and I'm probably going to send it off to be rebuilt, I'm about to get sent away for work again and don't have the time. The place I'm sending it to says to use "AW32 or AW46" for the power steering pump and system. Two questions: Do I need to fully drain...

    Power Steering Cylinder Replacement

Welp, found out why my power steering pump burned up...leak on the power steering cylinder. Had the boat out on the water and noticed I couldn't keep the pump fluid at a constant level. Then saw the dreaded drip. I'm going to replace the power steering cylinder and not try and have it rebuilt...

    Tensioner Replacement

While replacing my power steering pump yesterday the tensioner broke where you insert a breakerbar. Gonna order a new one. I can't find anything in the shop manual about replacing the tensioner. Is it as simple as just one bolt?

    Power Steering Pump Replacement

Took the boat out and noticed a burning smell. Opened the hatch and the power steering pump was smoking. Checked it and she was dry. (I can post more on what happened - it was my fault but doesn't matter now). I know the pump is now toast. Has anyone replaced one of these on their own? I can't...

    Serpentine Belt

2004 4.3 GXi-E. Engine has 227 hours on it. I have had the boat since 2015 and have never replaced the serpentine belt. I DO carry an extra OEM belt in the boat. How can I tell if the belt it bad or not? I've included some photos taken recently.

    Boat Battery Questions - Cranking

2004 Hurricane with a 4.3L Volvo inboard. No trolling motor. When I got the boat it had two Interstate 27m-HXD cranking batteries in it with a selector switch (one, two or both). Last year one of the batteries died and I went to the local battery dealer (the only one) and all they was a...

    Another winterization question

My boat is in South Texas and 99% of inboard owners don't winterize down here, but my gut is telling me to at least think about it this year. If I pull the drain plugs in the engine, is it a MUST to then run anti-freeze in to the engine or am I ok just leaving the engine dry (no anti-freeze)? I...

    Impeller replacement question

Saw a video the other day and the mechanic replaced the impeller (2007 5.7L, don't know model) and said that before starting the engine in the lake to hook up water to the boat via muffs or the water inlet on the engine (for a garden hose) and force water in to the impeller becuase if you run...

Wiring in kill switch - 2004 Volvo 4.3

2004 Volvo 4.3 GXI-E on a Hurricane Sundeck 187. Boat currently does not have a kill switch (came without one). I'm headed down to do some work on it in a few weeks and want to make sure I have my ducks together as it's a 3 hour drive. The kill switch I purchased has 4 prongs so it can...

    Serpentine belt replacement 4.3GXI-E

Headed to the boat for the weekend, looking through my maintenance log I haven't done the serpentine belt since 2015 (approx 103 hours on engine since 2015). While the belt visually looks fine, I have read that volvo recommends replacement every 3 years. Is this right? I have a spare belt...

    What is this? Volvo throttle.

Went to check on my boat and noticed this piece had broken off my throttle. I know it’s not the kill switch (boat didn’t come with one) and best I can remember is was just some sort of button that pushed in. Don’t think I ever figured out what it did. Bonus points if you have a part number so I...

Compression test procedures for 4.3L GXI-E

Found a pdf of my Volvo service manual so I can do a compression check, but for whatever reason it doesn't list the procedure for the GXI-E. (2004 4.3L GXI-E) From the manual: • To Prevent Sparking: —4.3GL/GXi-A/B: Remove (grey) 2-wire connector, with purple and grey wires, at ignition coil...

Cleaning the LP and HP pumps on fuel pump

I've seen a video on how to take the fuel pump apart, but how do you actually clean the pumps? Debating doing this myself versus sending off but didn't know if anyone else had tried to do this on their own. I also don't have a way of actually testing the pumps....

Boat is in the shop. Sad day.

2004 Hurricane SD187 with a Volvo 4.3L GXI-E. 196 hours. All fluids changed last fall. New plugs, wires and dizzy cap changed earlier this year. New fuel filter installed last fall. Went to take her out for the first time this year and she started right up but then idled very rough and didn’t...

How long for water in an I/O to freeze?

2004 Hurricane with a 4.3L Volvo. Boat is located 3 hours from me in an enclosed shed with a concrete pad. A freak weather system came through Texas the last two days and temps hit 0. I did not have time to get down and drain the water out of the engine. (And have never had to in south Texas)...

RPM's surging, think I fixed the problem

2004 Hurricane SD187 with 4.3L GXI-E, approx 190 hours on the engine. Boat had been sitting for five months and finally got to take her our yesterday. Air temp 75, water temp 57, wind 5-15mph. New oil/filter, gear oil, fuel filter all done last fall. Put in fresh gas this trip. Started up and...

Starting an engine that's been sitting...

2004 Volvo 4.3 GXI-E. Boat is stored in West Texas in an enclosed storage shed. Only got to take the boat out twice last year due to the lake being closed for covid and then work getting crazy. I run mid-level octane (I know I don't have to, but it makes me feel warm and fuzzy) and marine...

    Plugs and wires for 4.3L

2004 4.3L gxi-e with 198 hours. Engine has started to run a little rough so I’m going to replace the plugs. I’ve owned the boat since 2015 and have not replaced the plugs. Water/fuel separator, oil, impeller all changed annually. I found an old thread here that said to use AC Delco or NGK...

    Change fluids?

2004 Volvo 4.3 GXI-E with 199 hours on it. January 2019 I changed the engine oil, gear oil, impeller, fuel filter, oil filter. Boat is only run in fresh water, stored indoors in South Texas. I put 20 hours on the engine from January 2019 until today. Should I do all the fluids again...
